Very chuffed to have made The Power List by Northern Power Women – what a huge honour to be on a list with such fabulous women, all striving to help lift the North up. Together we rise!
Massive thanks to our wonderful team for the nomination, but also for the self-reflection you’ve inspired – looking at what you wrote gave me real food for thought about what our people most value in our leadership. My takeaways below - not exclusive to female leaders, but the best that I've worked with have shown all of these:
1. Be real. Don’t say ‘I’m fine’ when someone asks how you are – tell them you’re knackered because you haven’t slept or because you’ve been struggling to get a client deliverable just right. Being honest means that when you ask the question back, your team have got permission to also be honest.
2. Provide (and request) feedback. If you fudge it, you’re both unhappy. If you share what you’re thinking, it gives them the opportunity to tell you how you could have been clearer. If you invest in someone else’s improvement, they’re that much more likely to want to help you when you’re in a bind. It’s a win/win – you both help each other improve and you both develop a stronger commitment to a shared endeavour.
3. Roll your sleeves up when you need to. I’ll never forget working at 11pm one night at a more junior grade and getting a text from my manager – ‘hope everything’s going ok!’. Yeah, thanks for that. I don’t want my teams working late; but sometimes we have to. If they have to, I’ll be there with them – simple as. Except for slide formatting; they tend to steer me away from that, not sure why.
4. Parent ‘out loud’. Don’t hide the fact that being a hands-on parent and working at a senior level can be really bloody tough. Don’t apologise that you can’t articulate thoughts properly because your 2 year old is going through a sleep regression and you’re operating on 2 hours sleep. Normalise it. Pretending you’re Superwoman sets unrealistic expectations (for you and them).
5. Aim for the sky. Yes, I have high standards. My husband would say too high (obviously incorrect). But if we don’t aim high from the get-go, we’re limiting ourselves and our team’s ability to fly. We can always pare down / refine / amend. I think our job is to facilitate big dreams and think about how we achieve them – it’s only through doing this that we can really break the boundaries of the possible.
Big love to our team, helping each other to rise, as well as our clients who continue to challenge us to aim higher every day.

We're joining you from O'Brien Hall at Marquette University, which is launching a new program that will create the next generation of insurance sales leaders. Our industry is at an inflection point - if trends continue, we won't have enough young talent to keep the insurance industry growing. This unique program at Marquette is a step forward in correcting that situation. A few more thoughts are below.
