Ahead of the #SummitOfTheFuture, I joined 55 other youth experts to contribute to NORRAG on "Meaningful Youth Engagement: Time to Deliver". In this piece titled; Why Representation Matters, Matteo De Simone and I attempt to explain the protracted systemic imbalance in UN internships that have kept the already underrepresented group out of opportunities. For the Fair Internship Initiative , meaningful engagement means making UN internships quality, accessible, and PAID. This has the potential of drastically addressing inequalities—protecting economically disadvantaged families in the global south from poverty and beaming hope to the next generation of leaders with just one opportunity. Understanding the interconnectedness of income disparity at the family levels and youth development made me join FII to advocate for internship reform even as a child rights expert by practice. Today, I'm pleased to have co-authored with Matteo De Simone, the co-founder of Fair Internship Initiative and I thank the Ban Ki-moon Foundation, Global Partnership for Education and Learning Planet Institute for amplifying our voices. Higher Education Executive Leader | Transforming lives through Higher Education | Lifting student and staff voices while fostering welcoming and inclusive campus communities
I am so happy to meet with our students — whether it’s 2 or 12 or 20:— to learn about their Cougar Experience, what we do well, and areas we could do better. Today we spent quite a bit of time on internships. #GoCoogs #studentaffairs #studentsuccess #highereducation #studentvoice
Dr. Daniel Maxwell, our Associate VC/VP of Student Affairs, hosted “Donuts with Dr. Dan” session with his fellow colleagues Dr. Monica Thompson, Executive Director of University Career Services and Dr. Anne Dayton, Director of the Cougar Initiative to Engage (CITE). The students shared their perspectives about internship opportunities and their cougar experience. There are so many important lessons here: 1. Own voices: Provide opportunities for affected people to tell their own stories in their own voices. 2. Provide mentors and role models that are reflective of the population you serve. 3. Boost internships. They can lead to high quality jobs and important networking. 4. Listen and respond to the population you serve. Small interventions can be very impactful.
