Marco Quarta ha fondato e guida, nella Silicon Valley, una startup che si chiama Rubedo Life Sciences.
Il nome viene dall’alchimia: in latino rubedo (‘rossore’) è l’ultima fase della Grande Opera, in cui si completano le trasmutazioni chimiche e si realizza la pietra filosofale, la medicina universale che cura ogni malattia e assicura la longevità.
L’azienda sviluppa farmaci che eliminano le cellule senescenti, cioè quelle che smettono di riprodursi e rilasciano sostanze che provocano infiammazione. “Per ora vogliamo trattare malattie croniche legate all’età”, dice Quarta. “In futuro tratteremo persone ancora sane, prima che ne abbiano bisogno, per rallentare l’invecchiamento stesso. Significherebbe passare da una medicina reattiva a una preventiva”.
