🛠️ Why Archaeological Mitigation is Crucial for Your Development Projects Construction professionals, government agencies, and project managers—are you aware of the potential risks archaeology can pose to your development plans? Our short film explores why engaging with archaeological experts early on is key to project success. Here's how it benefits you: 🔍 Mitigate Risk: Archaeological challenges can lead to unexpected issues. Early involvement of archaeologists helps manage and reduce these risks, ensuring smoother project progression. 💼 Cost-Efficiency: Proactive archaeological mitigation at the outset of your project is the most cost-effective approach. Avoid expensive surprises by addressing potential risks early in the planning stage. ⏱️ Prevent Delays & Disputes: Conducting early archaeological evaluations strengthens your planning application and reduces the likelihood of delays or conflicts that could set your project back. 🏛️ Comply with Heritage Laws: Heritage protection is a critical aspect of legal planning. By integrating archaeology into your early project phases, you ensure compliance and protect both your project timeline and our shared cultural heritage. Watch our short film to learn more about how early archaeological engagement can safeguard your project's success. Let’s build for the future, while protecting the past! 🎥🔗 #Construction #Archaeology #RiskManagement #HeritageProtection #Development #ProjectPlanning #Compliance

It is a pleasure to announce that we have a new Health and Safety Guide: Safe Working for Archaeologists as part of UK Construction Projects. This guide focuses on presenting an overview of managing health and safety on constructions sites in the UK. However, while the laws and guidance are specific to the UK, much of the best practice and process are applicable to any country. https://lnkd.in/evTM_8V7 #archaeology #healthandsafety

How can a Forensic Archaeologist help your case? Archaeology is the study of the human past through its physical remains. It can enable us to understand the activities associated with a crime, such as digging and backfilling a pit or grave, concealing a body (or other items) in a pre-existing hollow, or concealment under concrete floors or other parts of a structure. Cellmark’s forensic archaeological approach comprises four main stages that can be used together or individually. They progress from non-intrusive methods to archaeological excavation: • Search Assessment and Mapping Service (SAMS) • Aerial remote sensing • Walkover survey • Archaeological excavation Over the next few weeks we’ll explain each service in a bit more detail. Give our AAE Team’s page a follow to make sure you don’t miss anything! #ForensicArchaeology

Last weekend, NSA Archaeologist Kelly Higgins received the Publication of the Year Award at the 50th Annual Conference of the Archaeological Society of South Carolina (ASSC)! Kelly's paper, titled "The Dixon Bay Site: A Resource Procurement Camp Site Around a Carolina Bay," is featured in the latest issue of SC Antiquities. The abstract is below: Archaeological investigations at the Dixon Bay Wetland Mitigation Tract identified a resource procurement landscape comprised of short-term campsites. Precontact populations presumably visited this location as part of a resource procurement round that included collec.ng lithic materials from the Savannah River or Brier Creek and gathering resources from Dixon Bay. The survey identified three sites, 9SN259, 9SN260, and 9SN261. Sites 9SN259 and 9SN261 are temporally non-diagnostic Precontact artifact scatters, while 9SN260 has components da.ng to the Archaic and Woodland periods. The focus of this paper will be on 9SN260, the largest of the three sites. Big Bay, in Sumter County, South Carolina, is another intensively occupied Carolina Bay. Multiple sites around Big Bay have been subjected to data recovery excavations, and those investigations produced data on raw material preference, changes in settlement systems, ceramic sequences, and site structure. The results of the work conducted at Big Bay is used for comparison to the Dixon Bay sites, as it could help inform us of what further investigations at Dixon Bay may uncover.

As of October 3rd, 2024, BOEM has rescinded the NTLs and Mitigation 3.20 Avoidance of Archaeological Resources for conventional energy sector working on the Outer Continental Shelf. The rescinded NTLs conflicted with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. BOEM has amended 30 CFR 550 with the finalized rule that will increase the protection of archaeological resources by requiring OCS operators to submit an archaeological report with any plan that proposes to disturb the seabed, defines the survey standards based on the capabilities of the instrumentation, and requires that a qualified marine archaeologist collect and analyze survey data. There is also a one-year phase-in period for existing leaseholders. New leases after October 3rd, 2024 will be required to apply the new requirements of the final rule. We at Berger Geosciences, LLC are monitoring the changes. Please feel free to contact us for further information. BA History and Archaeology Graduate Current MSc student in Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology PCIfA Accredited Archaeologist Writer and Researcher for The HERstory Project
Whilst we get to sit in trucks and do paperwork when it rains during every day archaeology work, this is not a luxury shared by forensic archaeologist! Quite frankly, this makes me feel better as I like to just crack on with my work! As you can see, though, I got very wet! Suffice to say, I loved digging again in this module! In the Geological strata all these evidences are preserved if one can search meticulously regarding plant world, one can have enough of evidences from pores/pollens. By SA De.🌳🌱

Archaeology and heritage can feel like a bit of a minefield for developers when there's a requirement for archaeological or heritage-related works. To help guide you through this process follow us for posts explaining technical terms you might hear and why different types and stages of work are required! This week's post focuses on Written Schemes of Investigation. A Written Scheme of Investigation, or WSI, is a design document that outlines the methods that will be used to carry out archaeological or heritage work, either pre-application or as part of a planning condition. WSIs can be required for a variety of heritage and archaeological activities including watching briefs, evaluations, excavations, historic building recording, geophysics and fieldwalking. The WSI will includes important sections on the historical background, methodology, health and safety constraints and responsibilities, and post-excavation processes (including finds processing and archive deposition). A WSI is sometimes written in response to a brief issued by the local authority and must meet both local and national professional standards. It also serves as an agreement, specifying the scope of work that will be undertaken on behalf of the client. The WSI must be approved by the local planning authority before the work it outlines can begin. Approval of the WSI may allow a partial discharge of a condition. We work closely with clients and local authorities to produce WSI that outline a scheme of work that is professional, cost-effective, and robust. Our talented staff have years of experience liaising with local authority archaeological officers and producing high-quality reports. Please do get in touch if we can assist you with any of your development projects – we would be thrilled to help! #writtenschemeofinvestigation #wsi #archaeology #heritage #northeastbusiness
