During my twelve years as an elected County Commissioner, the most unusual thing I ever did at one of our public meetings was to unexpectedly play my guitar ... and sing! This was pretty much on a dare by one of the Department Heads. I accepted the challenge! This unannounced performance, in front of the department heads and a public audience, was certainly out of my comfort zone ... but it went well! I was actually encouraged by the audience to perform another round of the song, "You are my sunshine!" And it turns out that the resulting video from that meeting was one of the most watched during my 12-year tenure. How can this personal revelation matter in your business? Well, it turns out that when we allow ourselves to step out of our comfort zones -- to be vulnerable -- we can connect more deeply with our teams, our clients and our prospective clients. It shows that we are more than our titles and roles -- we are individuals with varied talents, passions and vulnerabilities that we are willing to share with others. Sharing something so personal breaks down the invisible barriers that often exist between ourselves and others. It helps us connect on a deeply human level. According to Brene' Brown, a thought leader on vulnerability, "Staying vulnerable is a risk we have to take if we want to experience connection." This rings true when we are trying to build relationships, whether they are within teams, or with clients and prospective clients. By revealing our authentic selves, we invite others to connect with us on a more personal and meaningful level, fostering trust and openness. My public guitar performance at an "official" meeting is only one of many ways to be authentic and embrace vulnerability and creativity in our businesses and leadership roles. It's often the unscripted moments that have the most significant impacts.

Guiding $5M-$35M firms to multiple 8-figure growth | People, Practice, Profit, & Revenue Optimization | $100M+ generated
Too often we confuse what we do with who we are. - I'm a CEO - I'm a leader - I'm a lawyer - I'm a doctor - I'm a mother - I'm a husband But what happens when these roles change or disappear? Does that mean we lose who we are? Our identity isn't tied to job titles or societal roles. It's much deeper and bigger than that. It's about how we show up every day. It's our values, purpose, and mission. Take me, for example. I play many roles: husband, father, son, guide and teacher to business owners and ceos, among others. But these roles don't define me. Because at the core, that's not who I am. No matter the role or title, my purpose is consistent: To be a bridge. To support and guide those around me, helping them cross from where they are to wherever it is they're going. And to do this in a way that's true to my values and principles. That's the identity that really matters. That's the identity I can take with me, no matter where I go or who I'm with. So what about you? Beyond your title and roles, who are you really?

Are playing politics 'inauthentic'? After I left JB Hi-Fi, I was blessed to go and see Brené Brown at the Melbourne Convention Centre...with 5000 other people. In her 4 hour workshop, we participated in an activity to identify our values. I had an amazing ah-ha moment - one of my values was 'authentic'. I didn't feel as if I had been authentic to myself in my last role, and I struggled with others who I perceived as 'inauthentic'. As an observer and analyser of life, I could see that the people who played politics well, adjusted themselves to the others they worked with. I thought they were being false. Hint: they are not. But what if I reframed 'authenticity' in the world of office politics as not showing EVERYTHING, but as responding to the core of a person that resonates with me? The only way to do that is to understand that person and develop insight into their values, the pressure from work, their reactions and emotions, and then connect. It won't solve politics - I am not that naïve - but on a one-to-one basis will help develop more allies. #designleadership #authenticity

At Propel, we are led by a team of smart, passionate and tenacious individuals. We are proud to celebrate the faces behind Propel. Starting with our leadership team. Meet Jay Vaghela, Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Big shifts and hard work have characterized Jay Vaghela’s career. Jay started his career as a corporate lawyer at a Bay Street firm. But it wasn’t long before Jay knew he needed something different and made the decision to join Propel – still in its early growth stages. The move from a law firm to a fintech company as an in-house counsel was a big jump. Jay had to shift his mindset and not only identify problems but understand the business well enough to provide meaningful solutions. Jay’s advice to people making big shifts: “learn the business, understand your ‘client’ and lighten their workload by adding value”. This shift also taught Jay another important lesson: “business is always changing, and in order to continue to add value, you must also continuously grow with the business.” With a drive to improve, he is constantly assessing himself and his team to ensure they are evolving and excelling. For Jay, “hard work beats talent every time”, so it is no surprise that he defines success as, “working to be 1% better every single day”. In recalling the best piece of advice he’s ever received: “if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.”

Portfolio Non-Exec, Experienced CEO, Public Speaker, Entrepreneur in Residence and people focused growth expert.
Does your title define you? When I stepped down from my role as CEO of a top 200 law firm, I thought I knew what to expect, but one thing came totally from left field and smacked me right between the eyes – a loss of identity! For years my role was not just a job; it became a part of who I was. That's what happens when you fully throw yourself into something. If people didn't know me personally, most knew of the firm I led. A few months after stepping down, I was asked at the gym "What do you do?", my instinctive response was to mention my former title and position - but that was the past, that wasn't me anymore and I was on a new journey. I kept doing this.....was it for a sense of familiarity? Maybe a bit of clinging to the past? Turns out, it was a bit of both. It took time, but I started fully owning who I am now, not just what I used to be. It wasn't just about finding a new label. It was about rediscovering myself outside the suit and boardroom. It was about being me, not just the guy who used to run a law firm. In fact, I now have more titles, more roles and more success stories than I've ever had. To those who've experienced or are experiencing this, remember that you are more than your job title. Your worth isn't tied to a position. It's in your experiences, your values, and the impact you've made – and continue to make. Have you ever faced a similar identity shift? #ceo #founders #whoareyou
