As a young lawyer, develop strong relationships with your best peers in other departments. Never sacrifice quality. Have the relationship be broader than only business matters. Form a strong cohort in the firm. Don’t be pressured by more senior people looking for your internal referrals. If they haven’t made it, they aren’t the wagon to rely on. Look to help laterals; they have staked their career on being treated well. Trouble is a bully group leader. There is nothing sadder than a senior person seeking pledges of allegiance. Have people you can consult in other groups; so many issues have aspects beyond your expertise.

One of the greatest indicators of #success is making wise choices about the people you choose to surround yourself with. Whether you are a #lawyer, #investor, #lender, #entrepreneur or any other role in the innovation economy, being smart about the #teammates you choose to work with is the most important indicator of success 😎 Having spent parts of my career working for/with people who only cared about themselves, I learned this lesson the hard way but you don’t have to. When interviewing for a role, dig deep into the people you will be working for/with. What is their reputation in the market? How do they present themselves? Do they seem genuinely curious about you and your goals? Have they cultivated a supportive culture that will enable long term success. If not, run away as fast as you can. 🏃🏽♂️ I’m so grateful for my colleagues and our leadership team at DLA Piper, our incredible clients, my partners at The Legal Mentor Network, the amazing folks I coach ⚾️ with and all the other fantastic humans I get to interact with on a daily basis who inspire me to be the best lawyer, #mentor, #coach, #lawdad and husband that I can be 👊🏽 If you don’t feel like you have that in your career, reach out to me or my friends at LMN and we can help guide you to finding the team that will enable you to be all you want to be! #mentoring #lawyers #biglaw #coaching #team

Get to know your team and firm dynamics: Advice from a law firm leader Jeffrey L. Payne, a leader at Turner Padget Graham & Laney, P.A., shares his advice for effective leadership. He emphasizes the importance of being present and getting to know your team personally to understand the dynamics of the office and firm. He also suggests taking on responsibility for non-billable issues like marketing and recruiting. Payne has been with the firm for 33 years and has served as practice group leader and on the executive committee. He credits his success to his dedication to the firm and high expectations for service. Payne utilizes technology like scheduling tools and conference calls to benefit the firm. He advises aspiring leaders to avoid working remotely and to take on non-billable responsibilities. Payne's mentor, R. Wayne Byrd, had a significant influence on his career. Looking ahead, Payne predicts telehearings and artificial intelligence will shape the legal industry. He cautions against behaviors like infidelity, addiction, and greed that can derail leaders' careers. Payne is currently focused on listening and learning from his colleagues to collaborate effectively for clients' benefit. A while back, we started tracking how people in the legal industry were using LinkedIn. We excluded leaders, founders and barristers as we track them elsewhere. At the beginning, we looked at 100 successful lawyers and professionals and we asked for nominations to make sure we captured the very best. And then we got scientific and added people from every firm in the top 200 UK law firms. As of today, we track 520 individuals* on their LinkedIn performance. Why the heck would we want to do this? 1) Because we love to have stats and facts at our disposal when we train people on LinkedIn 2) Because we love to have leading examples at our fingertips when we train people on how to get the most out of LinkedIn 3) Because we're geeky data boffins at heart 4) When I say we... I mean me, mostly. This quarter's report should be ready for publication tomorrow, we hope. Who is the GOAT this quarter? *in addition to the leaders, founders and barristers that we cover elsewhere. #Marketing #LinkedIn #Lawyers #LawFirms #SimonSays

No one ACTUALLY tells you as a woman what it takes to reach the top in law. Common advice: ↳ Work hard ↳ Get good appraisal grades ↳ Network (whatever that means) ↳ Don't be too much of a perfectionist (maybe) ↳ Show you can lead (but not aggressively) ↳ Win some clients Yada yada. It’s the cliche. And tbh, it's worth about as much as the proverbial paper it's written on. What no one tells you is that in any corporate job - getting to the top means understanding politics. It means understanding that most promotion decisions are based on how much you’re liked and rated by key senior players - not how many hours you spend in the office. It also means understanding that while you will have supporters, there will be those who want to see you fail. I’m sorry - but it’s true. Because the more brightly you shine, the more envy you attract (ESPECIALLY from other women). 🔥 Be strong, be ambitious and be bold. And don’t forget your compassion - because a cold heart 💔 leads to a lonely life. But most of all: be YOU. Because, you will never, EVER, succeed, 👉 so long as you’re trying to be someone else. So with this in mind.... 🎬 Make sure to join Holly Cope and I this THURSDAY 16 May, where we will be taking this discussion further in our LinkedIn LIVE: "What it REALLY means to be a lawyer" 👀 (🔗 below). #lawyers #attorneys #womenempoweringwomen #lawfirms #leadership For more of my content, follow me, or tap the 🔔 on my profile: Helen Pamely ...AND if you're a woman with big ambition who is ready to own it and take your career to the next level 🚀 ...drop me a DM with the word: "Ready" 😎

Helping Founders and Execs grow better, act faster, lead smarter 👉🏻 Book a consult or DM for more info
“Don’t thank me for doing my job.” The 3-piece-suited General Counsel Kevin Abel would say to me. Followed by cheerful + colorful expletives. He taught me a lot over 7 years about constitutional and labor law in my 20s as we advocated our elected boss's policy agenda to local, state, and federal policy makers. He also helped me realize you can never say thank you enough. Even to those who think they don’t deserve it. Appreciating people never goes out of #leadership style. So do it today. See the amazing impact you make in other people’s hearts + minds + lives. By saying thank you. Again. And again. #DoWhatWeValue * * * * * I’m Dale, helping #founders grow + scale better, faster, and smarter. Follow me + DM re: on-demand exec coaching to become a high-performing founder + startup team. _____ Pictured left to right: Dale Archer, Kevin Abel (1949-2006), Governor Frank Keating, Trey Davis

As I reflect more on firms, I place more emphasis on and far more regard for those with truly quality people in values, respect and true decency. Are they truly engaged with the community. Do they have no tolerance for “ ass** les” and bullies? Are they engaged with the community beyond legal organizations? Do they accommodate personal needs and interests? How often do you see them really involved in helping people? Do they meet their ethical obligations and treat other firms with respect? They are the firms to join and stay with. We know the “ seven sisters “ is an outdated concept in that it misses the firms with enormous sectoral expertise in critical sectors. Time to identify the “ best sisters”- those with the best leaders, values, real collegiality, great people and community builders.
