Leesburg, FL. to spend nearly $44 million to support the city’s rapid growth City of Leesburg, State of Florida - Leesburg city commissioners unanimously approved two resolutions this week totaling $43.876 million to expand the Turnpike Wastewater Treatment Facility and improve lift station #72. The Turnpike Wastewater Treatment facility capacity had been increased in 2022 from 3 million gallons per day to treat 4.5 million gallons per day under phase one of the expansion program. The projected growth in that area of the city caused by the expansion of The Villages necessitated that the plant be expanded to 6 million gallons per day capacity. The turnpike treatment facility expansion is budgeted to cost no more than $39.884 million and will be managed by the Wharton-Smith Inc. company of Sanford. Wharton-Smith, Inc. will act as the construction manager on this project which is projected to cost the city no more than $3.992 million. USIBWC Announces Contract to Expand $600 Million California WWTP Project As a California resident, it's been deeply frustrating to witness our beaches closed due to Mexico’s release of raw sewage into the Pacific Ocean. I’m relieved to see proactive steps finally being taken to address this issue. USIBWC Announces Contract to Expand $600 Million California WWTP Project The United States Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC) has awarded a contract for the design and construction of the rehabilitation and expansion of the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant (SBIWTP) in San Diego, California. The first phase, in the amount of $42.4 million, covers design for the full scope of the rehabilitation and expansion of SBIWTP and anticipates bringing clean, safe water to the local communities. The project includes essential rehabilitation of existing infrastructure and capacity expansion to double current treatment capacity of 25 MGD to reach 50 MGD average flow, with a peak hydraulic flow capacity of 75 MGD. The plant’s expansion, in combination with wastewater infrastructure improvements in Mexico under Minute 328, is intended to eliminate up to 90% of untreated wastewater reaching the coast, providing cleaner, safer water for local communities. For everyone affected by the devastation of Hurricane Milton, please know that you are in our thoughts. This Category 5 storm is projected to bring a 15-foot storm surge along the coast, impacting Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota. With sustained winds of 160 mph, Milton is being called the “storm of the century.” It turned north-east overnight, about 300 miles south-west of Tampa, and is heading toward densely populated and vulnerable communities. While the storm may weaken to a Category 4 at landfall, it is still expected to carry winds of 130 mph. The National Hurricane Center has warned that Milton could be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida. This comes just two weeks after Hurricane Helene, raising concerns about debris becoming dangerous projectiles during this next storm. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by this historic event. It is inspiring to witness communities coming together in times of need. We extend our admiration and gratitude to the first responders, volunteers, and everyone who is standing by to assist with the recovery efforts. Stay safe. It’s Source Water Protection Week — a time to recognize the vital work being done by our communities to protect our drinking water. By teaming up with local environmentalists, community leaders and advocates, water utilities can magnify the impact of their source water protection efforts. These influencers can serve as valuable allies, amplifying the message of safeguarding water sources, showcasing utility initiatives, and motivating residents to get involved. Through these partnerships, everyone comes together with a common goal: ensuring a clean and sustainable water supply for future generations. Protecting our water sources is the best way to ensure high-quality drinking water at the tap. Keeping our rivers, lakes, and groundwater free from pollution makes it easier and more cost-effective to provide safe, healthy water.
