Today in History (TIH): 2013 Completion of the One World Trade Center. Shout out to engineers who made it happen; WSP Group was the lead structural engineer; Jaros, Baum & Bolles (JBB) provided MEP engineering; and Tishman Construction was the main contractor.
Currently not only the tallest building in the United States, but it also the tallest in the Western Hemisphere, and ranks as the seventh-tallest globally. The new structure rises from the northwest corner of the 16-acre World Trade Center site, bordered by West, Vesey, Fulton, and Washington Streets.
Groundwork for One World Trade Center began on April 27, 2006, with the building reaching New York City's tallest status by April 30, 2012, surpassing the Empire State Building. The completion of its steel frame on August 30, 2012, followed by the placement of the final piece of its spire on May 10, 2013, brought the skyscraper to its full height of 1,776 feet—a nod to the year of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The heart of the structure is crafted from exceptionally robust concrete, reaching a strength of 14,000psi, setting a record for the strongest concrete used in New York. This formidable strength not only allowed for thinner wall constructions, thereby expanding the usable space for leasing but also reduced the quantity of materials needed. Moreover, by substituting over half of the cement used with by-products from industrial processes, the construction significantly lowered its carbon emissions. Additionally, the structure's commitment to sustainability is underscored by the use of over 95% recycled steel, contributing to its achievement of a LEED Gold certification for environmental sustainability.
The doors of One World Trade Center opened on November 3, 2014, with the One World Observatory welcoming visitors starting May 29, 2015. In a pivotal moment on March 26, 2009, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey clarified that the building's official designation would be "One World Trade Center" rather than the colloquially used "Freedom Tower." The structure encompasses 94 stories, with its highest floor marked as 104.
The broader vision for the World Trade Center complex includes the addition of five high-rise office buildings along Greenwich Street and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum located just south of One World Trade Center, on the footprint of the original Twin Towers. The development of One World Trade Center is a key part of the collective endeavor to pay tribute to and rebuild from the remnants of the original World Trade Center complex.
