One of the things I have enjoyed most about "funemployment" has been having the brain space and time to connect with great people and contribute in new ways. Thanks to an introduction from Heather Doshay at SignalFire, I had the chance to meet Bryan Lee and Xi Sun and to sign on to advise their incredible legal tech startup, Ruli, the AI Teammate for inhouse counsel. Even more exciting, today, Ruli is coming out of stealth with $2.2M pre-seed! 🚀, led by SignalFire. From my vantage point as a general counsel, I could immediately see the value in the tools the first time Bryan fired up a demo for me. Large and small inhouse legal teams are often trying to do more with less, but have requests and questions coming from all corner of the business. These requests are important and timely for the folks asking, but sometimes legal teams can slow things down due to resourcing contraints. Ruli helps solve the problem at intake and triage by automating answers and increasing productivity. Easier and lower risks issues can quickly get resolved while complicated and high risk ones are routed for more high touch handling. This also means legal team members get to focus more of their time and attention on the meaty work they love. Only 5% of in-house legal counsels use AI, but they're spending 30% more each year outsourcing work. That's why we've led a $2.2M pre-seed for Ruli, the co-pilot for in-house counsels. Ruli’s LegalDesk tool automatically intakes and answers common legal questions based on a company’s own policies. As I spend more time than desired with law firms around the globe, I have started to inquire about their use of technology & innovation for the industry - legaltech. While the industry has long been old school & slower to change, (except for rising fees) I am pleasantly seeing not only an increase in interest, but actual adoption of innovative technology and even some purchasing of equipment from leading names such as NVIDIA! Organically, I am seeing material adoption of legaltech start-ups via the growth results of portfolio companies of the The LegalTech Fund whereby industry verticals across the spectrum, not just law firms, are adopting including banks, insurance companies and business services which further increases the addressable market. Traditional limited partners have generally avoided sector-focused venture capital funds (outside of biotech or crypto) but the strategic interest from corporates, family offices, and high-net worth individuals, as well as other fund managers as fund LPs continues to increase, with many often seeking co-investment opportunities as part of the LP commitment beyond return potential and strategic insights. We still prefer sector #specialists. Mainstream investors are also active in legaltech. Harvey, the developer of an all-encompassing AI platform for researching and drafting #legal documents, just raised a $100 million Series C led by GV (Google Ventures) at a $1.5 billion valuation, with additional backing from investors including OpenAI, Sequoia Capital and Elad Gil. Also on Tuesday, #Canadian legal-tech company Clio - Cloud-Based Legal Technology raised a $900 million Series F, valuing the company at $3 billion.  New Enterprise Associates (NEA) led the deal. After slow, mostly static growth, investments in legal-tech startups have taken off as advances in AI give the vertical a shot in the arm. This year, deal value had already hit nearly $1 billion prior to the Harvey and Clio deals. #legaltech #law

With a focus on speeding up patent workflows, from discovery to litigation, I am glad to see Patlytics aiming to empower enterprises, IP professionals, and law firms. Recently securing $4.5 million in seed funding led by Google’s AI-focused VC arm, Gradient Ventures, the startup is poised for rapid growth.
