I was VERY pleasantly surprised to be invited by my good friend Sameer Dhanrajani founder of 3AI to participate on a panel at the #BEYOND2024 #LimitlessAI event. Here was this dinosaur surrounded by all this brainpower!! I guess the rationale was to get the average age of the panel up!! I was tasked with speaking for the motion on whether CAiO should be part of the C-suite VERY ably moderated by Nathan SV and a great panel of Sundara Ramalingam Nagalingam V Laxmikanth (VLK) Ramya Parashar and the inimitable Avnish Sabharwal. My view, based on my board experience, was that since the average age of board directors in India is 60, its not surprising that CAiO's rarely make the cut. The other view was an unequivocal, unambiguous maybe - depending on the nature of the industry. Too many CXO's in any case !!! Despite my very limited knowledge of the subject, I strongly believe that boards would benifit from this expertise especially in areas like risk management, better compliance, improved transparency, navigation through unconscious bias and data-driven decision making. The flip side is that since Ai lacks human judgement & intuition human oversight could impact ethical decision making. Additionally decisions could be unfair and discriminatory without adequate consideration of alternatives - garbage-in-garbage-out !! Lastly, and in my opinion most importantly, there could be lack of explanation of the process used to arrive at a conclusion. This is particularly relevant in the context of board liability and fiduciary responsibility. The bottom line is whether we like it or not its here to stay so we better ensure that adequate measures are in place to overcome these potential downsides.
