Did you know? The first-ever recorded use of stop signs was in Detroit, Michigan, in 1915, and they were originally yellow with black lettering. They were eventually standardised and adopted the world over by the 1968. #trafficmanagement #publicsafety #trafficcontrol #roadsafety #centralttm

Scan day = a good day. I got a nice 20 station capture of a gen yard yesterday for my boys over at Advantic Building Group. Lessons learned: 1) Faro's printable target file was a huge help! Here's a link: https://lnkd.in/emVZg5YJ 2) I bought some small traffic cones and numbered them to make registration easier. Generator yards tend to start looking the same after a few bays. 3) Always, always, always turn everything on before leaving and charge all batteries. Don't assume anything! I was getting ready to go and went with my gut to check everything. I ended up having to update firmware on the device. Finding that out in the field would have sucked! 4) Foot traffic is death! People were all up in my scanning area, so we had to work together. I may buy a sign that says, "scanner at work, stay back 30 ft" to help with this and put it on the tripod next trip. 5) If you think 3 bottles of water is good, bring 6! ATL heat doesn't mess around!

How do you measure #AV safety in a tangible and transparent way? Just ask Aurora. As the company approaches their first commercial AV trial run from Dallas to Houston, Aurora is laser focused on closing the Aurora Driver Safety Case, an industry first. At the recent Government/Industry Meeting in Washington, DC, we sat down in-person with Nat Beuse, Chief Safety Officer and member of the US Department of Transportation’s Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee, to discuss Aurora’s approach to AV safety and why scaling AVs will be a tremendous benefit to society. https://sae.to/3OB1tvE #SAETomorrowToday

No funny for you! "Driving the news: The Federal Highway Administration is phasing out funny messaging over the next couple of years, saying this type of wording on the road could "adversely affect respect for the sign." Details: States have two years to implement the new guidelines, according to the administration in its updated manual released last month. The administration, a division of the Department of Transportation, said messaging should be "simple, direct, brief, legible, and clear" as well as "relevant to the road user on the roadway on which the message is displayed." Signs should avoid messaging with "obscure or secondary meanings," including pop culture references or anything "intended to be humorous," per the administration. Such messaging, the administration notes, "might be misunderstood or understood only by a limited segment of road users and require greater time to process and understand." #travel #signs #notfunny #federalhighwayadmin

Every year in Metro Vancouver, car crashes kill 100 people. We believe that this number should be zero, and that cities—particularly the planners and engineers who we entrust to manage our transportation systems—have a responsibility to design our streets for safety above vehicular throughput. Before we can solve the road safety crisis that grips Metro Vancouver, we first need to raise awareness of the scale of the problem and build up public support for immediate, concerted action. That's why we put together an interactive crash map based on news articles and social media reports collected by our volunteers. The data is clear: people get hurt and killed on roads throughout our region. It's not a Vancouver problem, a Surrey problem, or a Ministry of Transportation problem; it's a region-wide crisis that will take region-wide action by staff and decision-makers at every level of government. Now is the time to rethink the design of our roads—from bikeways to arterials—to put the lives and safety of road users above all else. https://lnkd.in/gxMj3ZW2

This continues to be one of the many challenges hindering cities' growth and potential. Last week, I attended a conference in Philadelphia. While staying in Cherry Hill, I can't tell you the amount of parking lots and unutilized spaces that would be perfect for redevelopment/densification. The amount of heat parking lots withhold in summer time is immense. Which also contributes to the urban heat effect. In terms of scale regarding energy consumption of the suburbs, I think the amount of wasted energy used for people who majority take the same way to work or school every day. The amount of energy consumed in suburban communities continues to be a huge problem. However, densification in these areas and incorporating mixed-modal transportation systems such as bus connections to septal stations with integration of smart tech and fast payment options such as “Omni” could help cut down on energy consumption. Additional examples would be, redeveloping shopping centers, and corporate office parks and interconnecting them to bus rapid transit.
Really excited to be featured (as one of the weirdos who’s anti parking 🤣) in this epic Scene deep dive on Cleveland’s parking policies with Cleveland planner Matthew Moss Jacob VanSickle and others. https://lnkd.in/g5mWTeta
