There’s an interesting shift happening among family offices lately—many with over $1 billion in assets are moving away from traditional hedge funds toward quantitative trading strategies.
According to Hannes Hofmann from Citi, this trend is driven by the rising costs of hedge funds.
“A lot of family offices think hedge funds are too expensive,” Hofmann points out. Instead, these offices are turning to systematic strategies that use technology and math formulas to automate investments.
It’s not just about cutting costs, these strategies offer solid protection against market swings, which is a big draw right now.
They’re not just diversifying their portfolios, they’re also sharpening their investment strategies to be more efficient and effective in today’s market ups and downs.
Some of the largest family offices have already started putting serious money into quantitative strategies, especially to shield their assets in real estate and stocks.
This trend isn’t limited to one region either—European and Middle Eastern family offices are also exploring these new avenues.
Beyond just managing wealth, these offices are also influencing trends in private equity and even getting more involved in how listed companies operate.
In a world where political changes and unexpected events can rock markets overnight, the appeal of quantitative strategies is obvious.
“Family offices are saying, ‘Look, we want to stay invested, but something doesn’t quite feel right in terms of protections,’” said Hofmann “That’s why we are seeing these (quantitative) products move from a niche allocation in the hedge fund space into the core part of the portfolio.”
With family offices growing in number worldwide, the move to quantitative strategies is set to redefine how wealth is managed for years to come.
