November is Long Term Care Awareness Month! The soaring cost of long-term care for veterans means that, for some, a lifetime of savings could be wiped out in just a few years. To avoid that outcome, your family needs to have a plan. Long-term care is the assistance one needs with the “activities of daily living” - bathing, dressing, transferring (getting in or out of a bed or chair), walking and using the bathroom – as the result of aging, cognitive or physical impairment, or extended illness. And when it comes to financial planning, it’s among the most misunderstood and, consequently, least frequently addressed areas of need. I know a couple who requires 24/7 assistance, and it costs them $670 per day, or $20,100 per month. Learn more at https://bit.ly/40wWe79 and you can contact me for further discussion.

#Carers need support too - such an important thought to hold on to But there is, I think, still not as much consideration for the long-term impacts of caring even after it's done. A while ago I participated in a research trial for a new mammogram technique (bear with me here) but recently received a follow-up invitation to complete a survey of my individual & equalities circumstances. The questions included two on my current experience of parenting and caring. I have done both in my time but can't say they are what I do now (although you never stop parenting really!). It made me think that my experiences of both have probably had profound and long-term impacts on my health and psychology - and there certainly were stresses and grief alongside the happiness and satisfaction. These are part of me now and influence how I respond to the world around me. It is increasingly known that long-term stress and trauma do impact on health - so, even after they're done, I feel it should be included in health research. There was an opportunity at the end of the survey to reflect on the questions so I did mention these thoughts - and you never know, someone might pick up on it

Standing Beside Our Veterans Every Step of the Way For so many veterans, coming home is just the beginning of another battle—one that’s often hidden, complicated, and exhausting. Navigating the VA claims process, especially when it comes to securing mental health benefits, can feel like a mountain too steep to climb alone. Tomorrow, we’re hosting a special event on Facebook Live: "Understanding Nexus Letters: Essential for Your VA Claim." This session is dedicated to veterans and their families who are fighting for the support they’ve earned. If you or someone you know has faced challenges getting their benefits recognized, this is for you. A Nexus Letter can be the key that opens doors to the support veterans deserve. It connects their service to their current health struggles, acting as a vital piece of evidence in the VA claims process. In this event, we’ll cover: 🔸 **The importance of a Nexus Letter** – Why this document could be the difference between a denied claim and a successful one. 🔸 **How to get a Nexus Letter** – Practical steps to ensure you’re working with professionals who understand what’s at stake. 🔸 **Stories from veterans** – Real-life examples of how Nexus Letters helped veterans secure the benefits they were owed. But this isn’t just an information session. It’s a moment to stand together, to give our veterans the tools and knowledge they need to be heard. Our expert speakers will be there to answer questions, offer insights, and support you on this journey. Let’s be there for those who have given so much. Join us for this powerful session and share it with others who might benefit. Let’s make sure our veterans’ sacrifices are recognized. This is a positive step forward. Quite simply, bystanders are afraid or worried about the ramifications of performing CPR on women. Although CPR can be performed over clothing, defibrillation requires the casualties chest to be exposed – including removal of outer layers and bras. It appears that this puts people off when the casualty is female. In addition, there is a lot of confusion about where to place defibrillator pads on a woman. We should recognise that, whoever the casualty, their only chance of survival lies in the early and effective provision of CPR with defibrillation. #cpr #survival #defib #firstaid

What has thrilled me lately?? Evidence that our message is getting through at the highest levels! 🌟 Recently St John Ambulance updated their website information with advice on “How to do CPR and use a defibrillator on a person with breasts”!! It’s so gratifying to see that the conversations that we have are making a differences, and that the “big players” in the world of saving lives are starting to incorporate this crucial information into their training and materials. ❤ Thank you to everyone to has supported the work we’re doing and who has and is continuing to spread the life-saving knowledge of #BraOffDefibOn!
