Mixing ink for monoprinting - a quick process video from the studio. Printmaking ink systems include three parts - the ink with colour / pigment, extender (ink without pigment) and a third part that changes the viscosity or stickiness of the ink (not illustrated here, but with Hawthorn inks this is linseed jelly or oil). The three parts can be mixed to achieve the desired effect when printmaking. The higher the ratio of extender to pigment, the more transparent the layer of ink when printed. For monoprinting this is important as it is a process of building layers of colour which combine on the paper to create new colours. Do you questions about printmaking? Let me know
