Despite high interest, only 2% of institutions currently offer such programs. It's time for educators and industry leaders to bridge this gap and empower students with practical skills and financial independence. Is the US education system better than the Indian education system for higher studies? 🤔 I haven’t personally done my master’s in the US, so I can’t speak from personal experience. But I’ve spoken to several people who have studied or are currently studying there, and here are some key differences they shared with me: What sets the US system apart: 🤝 Collaborative Approach: Competitiveness takes a backseat, and collaboration is encouraged and appreciated. 📅 Flexible Exams: Exams can be scheduled at any time in coordination with your professor. 📖 Open-Book Exams: Most exams allow you to bring any materials—even Google is allowed! 🤯 ✅ Marks for the Right Approach: You don’t need to provide the 100% correct answer. If your approach and logic are sound, you can still score full marks. 📊 Holistic Grading: Your grades aren’t just based on exams; your overall behavior, participation, and contributions throughout the semester count too. 💼 CPT (Curricular Practical Training): Paid internships in real companies are integrated into the curriculum—not just a final semester project. Many students would have recently completed the induction/orientation program. Some must be undergoing. And a few will start. So, the induction/orientation program is over. The team-building exercises are over. The corporate talks/guest talks are over. The 'pearls of wisdom' that you gathered are over. The key learning takeaways are over. The talks on building 'a sustainable future' for the world are over. The content you created about joining the #bschool of your dream is over. Now, focus on YOU. Your interest. Your 'Why'. Your skillset. Acquire core competencies required for the careers. Build the profile. Build the portfolio of work through live projects/remote internships. Build the 'marketable and transferable skills'. Map the career roles and required capabilities for that. Work towards that. Remember the education loan. Remember the parents paying (and sometimes sacrificing) for you. Remember the raison d'etre to enroll for the MBA/PGDM program. Choose the elective courses wisely. Do not go by the name of the course. Or the instructor. Or the 'expert advice' from the seniors. You decide. Pick up based on the course outcomes+deliverables and its impact on your career trajectory. Remember the 'chauffeur knowledge and Planck Knowledge Story'. Simply be aware and beware. As I've recently completed my PGDM journey I would like to share why I thought it would be the best course for me or what was my criteria of selection for this particular course 1) Entrepreneurial Skills: Enhances entrepreneurial skills, preparing them for the market. This encourages innovation, self-starting, risk-taking, and a realistic perspective on industrial aspects, attracting lucrative career opportunities. 2) Huge Choices of Specialization: PGDM courses offer students the opportunity to pursue various specializations in one academic year, allowing them to choose a preferred course in their first year and switch to another in the second, enhancing their chances of employment in various corporate fields. 3) Corporate Career: Highly valued in the corporate world, as they offer specialized, skill-based courses that directly enter the business world, while MBA degrees require additional effort to achieve the same results. 4) Personality Development: PGDM courses enhance students' personality, communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for professional challenges. Working as the Senior Coordinator of the Admissions Committee here at Indian Institute of Management Visakhapatnam, I've been seeing the same questions pop up from excited (and maybe a little nervous) new admits going to join B-schools this year.  𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝟯 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗜'𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺: 1. What on Earth Will I Be Studying? What will be my subjects in 1st & 2nd year? How will the curriculum look like? - Breathe. Seriously, take a moment to reflect on your incredible journey. You have made it this far, so trust yourself to handle the coursework too. The first and second years at IIMs/ great B-schools are designed to equip you with a strong foundation in business fundamentals through subjects like finance, marketing, strategy, organisational behaviour etc. Remember, most of you haven't specialised yet, so come with an open mind. 2) What all things should I carry? Should I Carry 2 suits or 3 etc. etc.? - Don't freak out! We know B-school life can feel like a whirlwind. Refer to a list of essential items from a relevant source. Check what you already have, and purchase what you don't. If you cannot find such lists, comment "Essentials" below or DM me. Should I add 4-5 new certifications to my CV? - While B-school life is undoubtedly packed, a little pre-prep can go a long way. Start making a one pager CV now. Gather proofs (certificates, awards) for each point. If you think you don't have enough content then consider relevant certifications that align with your career aspirations. Remember, invest in quality certifications over free ones – they'll hold more weight during placements. From the very first semester, we were introduced to a diverse range of subjects that provided a strong foundation in management principles. Courses in finance, marketing, operations, and human resources, among others, were meticulously structured to ensure a holistic understanding of the business landscape.
