When Architects, Urban Planners, Administrators tend towards Public Participation in desiging & planning, I feel its like undermining the skills of Architects, Planners and Administrators. Professionals I believe, are supposed to envisage what the users or public needs & how the public should be treated better. Better public convenience in the Design is the measure of professional skill. If professionals keep on asking the public or the users, and Design accordingly, then I think there lacks a sense of innovation and visionary approach. Example: A city has never seen a bullet train. If you conduct a feasibiliy public survey and ask about bullet train, you will get very wishful and impractical responses. And based on it one cannot make a real feasibility. I believe, professionals should have a skill to think on behalf of the common public, because a professional is also a common man with professional education and skill.
