In the upcoming weeks, we are excited to share more meaningful moments from SCG's 2024 Annual Conference, Better Together: Creating A Collective Legacy! This year, SCG was honored to have hosted Mayor Karen Bass as a guest speaker at our Annual Conference. We invite you to listen to an excerpt of her keynote address below. As Los Angeles prepares to host major sporting events in the next few years, including the LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games, Mayor Bass explored the potential of harnessing these events to catalyze social change and address issues such as homelessness and income inequality. As Mayor Bass emphasizes, the Olympics describe itself as a movement, which has the potential to bring about impactful change. If we really hope to achieve a 'Games for All' in 2028, then we must cultivate a sense of collective responsibility and work across sectors to tackle our city's most pressing social challenges. In her keynote address, Mayor Bass calls on the philanthropic community to be the leaders in catalyzing social change and moving the needle forward on Los Angeles's most urgent issues. As Mayor Bass states, "government takes a long time, but when you jump out in the lead, then the public sector can follow." Catalyzing Post-Traumatic Growth & Equitable Systems I focus on creating restorative programs that spark post-traumatic growth for people and communities. My work centers on bridging divides to empower humans to thrive.
Food insecurity is a growing concern across Pinellas County. We are honored to work with Daystar Life Center, Inc. through our #projecttryton initiative. According to Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap 2020 study, which used data from 2018: Pinellas County: - Food insecurity rate: 12.2% (124,430 people) - Child food insecurity rate: 19.1% (38,080 children) Hillsborough County: - Food insecurity rate: 12.6% (178,820 people) - Child food insecurity rate: 19.5% (61,600 children) It's important to note that these numbers are from before the COVID-19 pandemic, which likely exacerbated food insecurity in these counties and across the United States. Feeding America projected that the overall food insecurity rate for the United States could have reached up to 15.6% in 2020 due to the economic impact of the pandemic. #endhunger

Continuing our exploration of Marts&Lundy's $10M+ Gifts Report. In this week's #FocusForwardWisdom, we ask Marts&Lundy Healthcare Practice Leader Mark Kimbell: What sentiments are emerging from Marts&Lundy’s campaign planning studies – particularly as regards personal interviews with major prospects and donors? "While the political and cultural issues around women’s reproductive health have caused institutions in conservative states to pause or rethink how to prioritize this issue for philanthropy, interestingly, such caution has not been raised in donor interviews. High-level donors who are interviewed tend to have great confidence and trust in their physician and care teams but less so when it comes to the institution’s leadership, mainly because these leaders have not engaged often enough, or at all, with these donors. This is less the case among academic medical centers but especially true among health systems. Health system CEOs haven’t traditionally prioritized philanthropy or the donors. Our studies among health systems consistently contain recommendations around an increased percentage of CEO time given to meaningful donor engagement."
