This Black history month, we focus on the history of the fight for guaranteed income programs. Rooted in the fight for racial justice and civil rights, GI programs were championed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, the Black Panther Party, and the National Welfare Rights Organization. Direct cash payments are a solution to systemic inequity which disproportionately impacts Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in our communities. The Oakland Resilient Families Program has been providing unrestricted cash transfers to low income Black families since 2021. The program has combated poverty by allowing families to afford their basic needs, stabilize their household finances, resolve debt, and build savings for emergencies. Too often, wealth is equated with morality, ignoring the historical and systemic factors that keep families trapped in cyclical poverty for generations. Guaranteed income programs allow families an opportunity to stabilize their households and break the cycle.

One of our organizational values is Justice, and on Juneteenth we'd like to recognize the meaning of justice within our organization: “We are well aware that the social, political, and financial biases of humans make the balance of justice easy for some and very difficult for many. The scales of justice, be it legal or social, have a heavy human hand on one side of the scale that many do not have the resources to gain the supportive weight needed to offset the preconceived attitudes toward them. We see the shelter and its staff as the balancing force needed to help people get the fairness they deserve.” As you commemorate, celebrate, or reflect upon the significance of Juneteenth today, we want to recognize our team for their devotion to all our values, and our mission. A funny thing happened to me on my maternity leave. I read a fantastic book called Black Tudors: The Untold Story by Dr. Miranda Kaufmann FRSA and that one book did what my education and consumption of media had hitherto failed to do for the proceeding four decades…let me know that Black people had been part of the fabric of British history for centuries. This planted the seed of an idea for a book, to bring Black British history to life in a fun fictional way for kids. And that book launches today.   Time Tub Travellers and the Silk Thief is a fast-paced, action-packed adventure with a sprinkling of Black British history for 7 to 11-year-olds. As my friend's son Adam said, "for a book without dragons, this is very good."   But the road to getting here has been long and unexpected.   It took reframing my career, when I was feeling burnt out and frustrated. Stepping away from the churn to move to a more flexible working scheme which enabled me to work more with the leaders I respected, focus on projects that made good use of my strengths, and have the time and flexibility to write.   It took 18 months of rejections from just about every children's literary agency in the UK, but trusting the feedback from the amazing young readers who loved the book, to keep persevering.   It took learning about self-publishing industry, and realising that instead of waiting for the industry to give me permission to be a children’s author, I could give myself permission instead.   It’s not a requirement of schools to teach Black British history and there are brilliant non-fiction books for kids, but not enough. There are a few fiction ones too, but not enough.
