🍃 Nature restoration is vital. For our health, our economy, our food production and our resilience in the face of the climate crisis. 📢 In the name of #uwmoeder, (y)our mother, Mother Nature in person, we as The Shift vzw/asbl, together with more than 60 organisations from the wider civil society, are calling once more for nature to have a voice and a place at the negotiating table. 👍 Programs like 'Biodiversity in Action' (https://lnkd.in/dUiZyFAw) demonstrate readiness and capability for the implementation of nature-positive actions. Let's turn the tide, starting with the #naturerestorationlaw. It is still possible. A Flemish 'thumbs up' is all this important environmental law still needs to become a reality. 📜 Read the open letter here: https://lnkd.in/eGv9mrcB #RestoreNature #BePartOfThePlan #WeMakeTheShift #Biodiversity WWF-Belgium

Environmental justice (EJ) is here to stay. That was a key message that Ramboll colleagues took away from Air & Waste Management Association’s “Environmental Justice: from Policy to Practice” conference. The effort to reduce disparities between communities in burdens and advantages between is not a passing trend. “Though the regulatory focus and the strength of EJ-related regulations is new, the concepts and social drivers underlying EJ are not new,” explains Sandra Sulsky, a health sciences principal at Ramboll who presented at the conference. Sandy and Ramboll colleagues Kun Zhao, Farzan Oroumiyeh, PhD, and Mikhil Shetty (Micky) presented at the two-day conference, and they also attended sessions and engaged with other EJ practitioners, industry representatives, and regulatory officials in attendance. “In the plenary sessions, I noticed a focus on the multidisciplinary side of EJ,” says Farzan. “Due to its complex nature, different organizations, communities, and governmental agencies have to work together to address EJ issues.” Discussions also revealed some emerging trends in how EJ is achieved. “There was valuable discussion about the evolution of EJ-related regulations in the US,” notes Micky Shetty. “While federal regulations are expected in the next several years, some states and communities are taking the lead in driving EJ plans.” Kun observes that “in addition to local and state regulations, there is a growing interest in community engagement and collaboration as well cumulative impact assessment and mitigation.” These observations will help guide Ramboll practitioners improve services to better suit the evolving EJ needs of clients. “The implicit goals of EJ are to improve health and well-being, but the connections between EJ and health/wellbeing remain largely inferential,” adds Sandra. “Ramboll’s health scientists have the technical know-how to examine the proposed connections.” Interested in having our experts help you achieve your own EJ goals? Australia needs reforms that provide the necessary conditions for the fair transition to a nature positive economy. Read more in our submission to the Australian Government below. #naturepositive #sustainablefinance
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is currently conducting a rolling consultation series on ‘Australia’s new Nature Positive laws’. Earlier this month, we made our own submission to the consultation. Key takeaways: → Australia’s environmental protection regime is not currently achieving its intended outcomes for the environment, for the private sector (including finance), or for the community. → Reforms should provide the necessary conditions for Australia’s transition to a nature positive economy. This includes reform that helps achieve national ambitions and commitments, enables quantification of the value of nature and allows businesses and financial institutions to price nature-related considerations and integrate them into lending, insurance, and investment decisions. → ASFI welcomes the recent announcement regarding the establishment of the Environment Protection Australia and Environment Information Australia. These are important developments to strengthen environmental assessments, approvals, compliance and enforcement; and to facilitate the generation, collection, and dissemination of robust, consistent, quality and verifiable environmental data. → We encourage the Government to continue its work to reform the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act) and establish a robust environmental protection regime for Australia that creates strong baseline protection, management, and improvement of Australia’s natural environment and biodiversity. The forthcoming debate on the Built Environment Committee’s recent report on “The impact of environmental regulations on development” seemed as good an option as any for my maiden speech in the UK House of Lords on 19th April. The report’s subject matters include nutrient neutrality and the habitats regime, and I look forward to providing some insight on those, drawing on my previous role as Chair of JNCC and my ongoing practice at the Bar. #planning #environment #nutrientneutrality #habitats #housing
