Meet our new PhD student Zebin Duan: 1. What is your background? Hi, my name is Zebin Duan and I’m a PhD student under Professor Norbert Kruger. My parents are originally from China, but they relocated to Italy, where I completed all my education, including a Master’s degree in computer Engineering with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at the University of Padua. 2. Can you tell us a bit about your PhD project area at SDU Robotics? This PhD research aims to investigate how new robotic solutions can be developed by reusing both data and existing robotic code. The adoption of automation often encounters challenges such as high implementation costs, limited automation expertise, and the time-consuming process of case-by-case programming to achieve reliable solutions, particularly for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). Currently, my focus is on exploring the use of data collected from a force-torque sensor within a robotic pick-and-place pipeline. 3. What drives you work wise? I have always enjoyed conducting research, and I believe this PhD program will fulfill my desire for deeper exploration. Additionally, working with robotics has been a long-standing passion of mine. I’m deeply intrigued by what robots will be capable of achieving in the future, and I aspire to contribute to this evolving field and be an active member of the robotics community. Lastly, I see this program as an opportunity to challenge myself, grow, and tackle new problems in the field of robotics. 4. What interests you at the moment? My research interests include areas like industrial robots, collaborative robots, computer vision, deep learning, and zero-shot learning. On a personal level, I enjoy reading, traveling, cooking (and, of course, eating!), as well as playing video games. SDU Robotics is delighted that you have joined our team and look forward to our collaboration. #sdutech #sdurobotics #wearerobotheroes
