95% of people living with Tumour-Induced Osteomalacia (TIO) are initially misdiagnosed with another bone disease, primarily due to a lack of awareness about #TIO and its non-specific symptoms. People living with TIO can often suffer from progressive and severe disabilities, meaning a timely diagnosis is critical. However, it typically takes between 2.5 and 3.5 years for people to receive the right diagnosis, with 80% of patients experiencing a delay of over two years following their initial onset of symptoms. Fewer than 5% of these conditions have FDA-approved treatments available according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. When considering these numbers, it becomes clear that “rare” isn’t as rare as it may seem. Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS, is a progressive neurological condition affecting muscle movement. It is estimated that approximately 5,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with ALS each year and about 20,000 are living with the disease at any given time. Although it can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or race, most individuals diagnosed with ALS are between the ages of 40 and 70. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is only 2 to 5 years, making it one of the most devastating and rapidly progressing diseases known.
