Well that was a fast week since a sunny Footprint+ came to a close! - Time to reflect and consider how best practice can translate into standard practice for commercial property... Excellent speakers presenting case studies, who did an great job of showing how acting early, thinking long term and collaboratively – is the strategic pivot for Real Estate. Thanks for sharing the insight Ben Cross, Suki Gilliland, Anna Hollyman  Joe Morris In engaging Landlords, Occupiers and Investors that their decarbonisation pathways to Net Zero  can also represent  commercial routes to reposition challenging building stock- we can all collaborate for the benefits- “Better than New Build” was a great quote from Ben Cross. Advocating for those hard-won resources to address much more than Carbon. When done well- our Retrofit projects also address the hot topics of Climate Risk, Changing workplace needs, Adaptive reuse, Biodiversity, Revitalising High Streets… It’s  no  accident that this forms the majority of our early client conversations with our clients at Graham + Sibbald And where does  ‘design’  sit within this pathway? To retrofit existing commercial building and visualise how to uplift the asset with minimum intervention- that ticks all the boxes of: 🌍 Carbon 💷 Cost 🕚 Time ♻ Circularity 💚 Wellbeing 💡 Delight – this takes creativity, architecture expertise, ambition from the outset and we can share how it most definitely adds value! Great conversations with Simon Horn, David Russell, Carbon Futures across the day, reviewing our collective experiences of embedding those good retrofit habits into our approaches– all to be continued!

"Better than new build" There's a thought. Whilst this post is referring through a wide architectural lens, it's interesting to consider it within a rail perspective. As we know we need to focus on maintenance in CP7, and as Network Rail and all OEMs are actively challenging their supply chains on how we can reduce their scope 3s, and the NR revised sustainability strategy is coming very soon, perhaps we can all look at how we look at our building stock to proactively manage our operational footprints better?
