In case you missed it, I just thought I would put a shout out to the Agency for Clinical Innovation, who released an update of the Operating Theatre Efficiency Guidelines this month (May 2024) The new document, titled Operating Theatre Efficiency – Clinical Practice Guide, is more comprehensive than the original 2014 document. The Practice Guide identifies critical aspects to drive better outcomes for both patients and healthcare providers. Key inclusions in the revised document include: ·        Operating Theatre Culture: Emphasising teamwork, communication, and a positive work environment. ·        Standardisation of Practice: Ensuring consistency and best practices ·        Patient Pathways: Optimising each step of the patient’s journey for better coordination and care. ·        Sustainability: Integrating eco-friendly practices to minimize environmental impact. ·        The Patient Journey: Focusing on patient-centred care from admission to discharge. FTI Capital Advisors (FTICA) recently advised Coastal Administrative Group, LLC on transactions enabling a multi-step growth plan in teleradiology, hospital management, joint venture imaging facilities and office-based labs. The transactions created a new administrative services organization (“ASO”) through a reorganization and recapitalization of ownership of multiple physician practices, in addition to providing $50M in capital commitment to facilitate near-term growth initiatives. According to Apollo Global Management, Inc. - which owns more US hospitals than any other private equity firm - "Our flexible and vast platform enables us to add value throughout the lifecycle of an investment. We are responsible stewards of capital and are proud of our commitment to sustainability and demonstrated ability to generate attractive returns for our investors." A new study in JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association, calls Apollo's self-description into question. "Hospital Assets Before and After Private Equity Acquisition" compares the capital assets (land, buildings, equipment, and health information technology) of hospitals acquired between 2010 and 2019 by private equity firms, with matched hospitals not acquired by PE. Conclusion: After private equity acquisition, hospital assets decreased by 24% relative to that of controls during 2 years. In other words, rather than investing in improving hospitals' ability to care for patients, private equity companies extracted from them. This strategy has led to the collapse of Steward Health Care.
