Did you know that applying for the largest scholarship out there is not the easiest or smartest way to get aid for school? Large corporations offering scholarships are flooded with individuals seeking scholarships that shell out big money, while many smaller, more local scholarships are often overlooked. If you start early and spend time researching places in your own backyard, like your local community foundations, you can often find scholarships available that will help begin closing the gaps. https://lnkd.in/grvPPDtX

ICYMI | In West Virginia, billboards declare that students should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and “fetch funds for college fast.” In Alabama, students who have yet to finish the form are receiving direct text messages reminding them to complete their FAFSA. In Mississippi, dozens of businesses, churches and nonprofits are hosting events to help students with the application. States across the country have worked all summer on a final push to boost FAFSA completion rates, which have dropped this year due to the U.S. Department of Education’s botched launch of the revamped form. State officials and college-access professionals say their efforts, backed by a $50 million infusion from the Education Department, have helped to move the needle, but they don’t expect to catch up to last year’s application numbers. “The hole that students were in over all was so deep that it’s very hard to climb out … over the course of the summer,” said Bill DeBaun, senior director of data and strategic initiatives for National College Attainment Network (NCAN), a nonprofit. “Closing the gap is out of the question.” Read more ➡️ https://bit.ly/3MmPTmw

🌟 Paying for College? Here’s a Valuable Tip! 🌟 When it comes to financing your education, think beyond the obvious! 💡 Don’t limit yourself to major national scholarship databases. Instead, explore local and private scholarship opportunities right in your community. Here’s where to look: 1. Your Parents’ Employers: Some companies offer scholarships to employees’ children. Check with your parents’ workplace—it could be a hidden gem! 2. Local Organizations: Reach out to local clubs, associations, and nonprofits. They often have scholarships tailored to students in your area. 3. Churches and Faith-Based Groups: Many religious organizations provide scholarships. Connect with your local congregation to find out more. 4. Community Foundations: These organizations support education and community development. Investigate if they offer scholarships. Remember, these “hidden” scholarships might not be as competitive because they’re specific to your geographic area or match your unique situation. Every little bit of free money counts! 🎓💰 #CollegeFinancing #ScholarshipOpportunities #EducationMatters #financialaid #scholarships #collegescholarships #educationconsultant

Special Consideration for College Applications is Over! California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a groundbreaking bill that officially ends preferential treatment for wealthy families, alumni connections, and donations in the college admissions process. This new legislation applies to private non-profit universities, where factors such as legacy status (having relatives who are alumni) and financial contributions will no longer influence admissions decisions. Instead, the focus will shift to merit and qualifications, ensuring a level playing field for all students, regardless of their background or financial status. This law marks a significant step towards prioritizing hard work, dedication, and academic achievements in admissions. These changes highlight California’s commitment to making higher education more inclusive, fair, and accessible, giving every student an equal opportunity to succeed. 🌟 #HigherEducation #EqualOpportunity #FairnessInAdmissions

Today is Cares Day, Cal Lutheran’s annual day of giving. I’ve never seen a place more dedicated to student success, and we could use your help. There is a direct line between donors and the programs and services which serve students. Here’s a quick story to illustrate that line. Back when I was a student, I remember sleeping through an early morning Calculus class (probably following a late night coding session). Later that day, I got a call from my professor wondering where I was and what she could do to make sure I made it to the next class (shout out to Dr. Klassen). That kind of support matters, and it just doesn’t happen at many schools; especially big ones. That is part of why Cal Lutheran outperforms other schools in both graduation rates and the time it takes to graduate. Take that experience with my Calculus professor, and extend it to financial aid, clubs, athletics, performing arts, DREAMERS, education abroad, student employment, ministry, adult degree programs, disability support services, and more. Across the board, faculty and staff at CLU know our students, and that creates a vested interest in their success. Cares Day is an opportunity for donors to help support those efforts. We do not have access to many sources of funding available to public schools, so this is an important day. Check out the link below to learn more. Thank you for your support! #CalLutheranCares https://lnkd.in/guFJ_bm2

🎯Top US universities like Georgetown, Stanford and Yale have agreed to pay $166 million to settle a lawsuit accusing them of illegally favoring wealthy students. 🎯The class action lawsuit said schools conspired with each other to use unfair admissions practices that favored wealthy, privileged applicants. 🎯The plaintiffs argued schools favored students whose families could afford sizeable donations and give preferential treatment to the children of alumni. 🎯As part of the settlement, the universities did not acknowledge any wrongdoing but agreed to make admissions practices more transparent. 🎯Over 170,000 students who applied to these universities will be eligible for payouts from the settlement fund. 🎯The settlement aims to increase opportunities for disadvantaged applicants through revised admissions processes, scholarships, and recruiting.
