3 Mistakes I Made Early In My Career—And What I Would Have Done Differently I have been working in Software Engineering for 7 years. And in that time, I've gotten to do a lot of cool things: - Meet incredible people from other countries - See cool places - Faced new challenges every day - Learned a lot of stuff I love my journey and the person I am today. But if I could go back, here are a few of the mistakes I made early on—and what I would have done differently: 1. Speak more with my colleagues Every person is a learning opportunity. Speaking to colleagues, especially if they are not engineers, helps you learn about the business, the product, and the company. 2. Write everything down Writing things down is an essential part of communication. When you make a decision, write it down and make everyone read it in their head to ensure you are on the same page. Writing is an essential skill, primarily if you work remotely. 3. Think about the product, not just the code We often think our job as engineers is writing code. Our job is to create and improve a product. Writing code is just one part of our job. I want to be a Software Engineer. I aim to become a Technical Lead. I aspire to be an Engineering Manager. I dream of reaching Director, VP, or even CTO roles. And the list goes on... These are the big goals for developers when starting a career in software development. But let me tell you, it's not easy to achieve these milestones. It takes a lot of time, hard work, courage, and confidence at every step. However, there's another way—it's not as difficult to get there. It requires dreams, dedication, and, most importantly, confidence. It took me 15-16 years to build my confidence and reach these heights. After reaching there, I realized that this dream isn't unique to me but shared by millions. I've witnessed how people struggle in the corporate world just to reach one milestone. But what I've learned is that confidence is the key to conquering the world. Many believe that speaking English fluently is necessary for success. I used to think the same. But that's not entirely true. English is just a medium of communication, and many spend years learning it.
