The broad UK index currently trades on a wider than average valuation discount to developed market peers; 2. Smaller companies have gone through a prolonged period of underperformance relative to their larger counterparts; and 3. London-listed small-cap focused investment companies trade on highly depressed discounts to prevailing net asset values, comparable to levels seen only during historic periods of severe market stress. Episode 12 of our Investor Insights series features Simon Barnard, CFA from Fundsmith LLP and the Lead Portfolio Manager of the Smithson Investment Trust (SSON-LON). This was an interesting time to speak to Simon as Smithson’s high-quality portfolio now trades on a notably more attractive valuation level both in absolute terms, given the derating of higher growth, small and mid-sized companies seen over the last two years, and in relative terms, following the unusually prolonged period of underperformance of small/mid caps when compared to large caps. The episode also discusses the impact of share buybacks, using Smithson as an example of how value accretive the process can be and why, in our view, buybacks should form a part of prudent capital allocation for many UK-listed investment companies given the current prevalence of wide share price discounts within the listed fund sector.
