I had a recruiter reach out for a mid-weight Ruby software engineer role. Im flattered that: "..you are a great fit and we are excited to bring you this one off opportunity". Apparently, to be given the grace of 'qualifying for interview' I had to click a link and book 30 minutes in someone's calendar for an 'insights call'. I couldn't help myself, I had to look at the job spec. If I am lucky enough to land the job, I would qualify for 3 benefits: working with the latest software such as the latest Microsoft Office, work with innovative leaders who are happy to share their knowledge with me, and they will listen to my ideas for future direction. The required skills section was 3/4 of a page long. How's that for balance? Recruiting Software Engineers is hard, and it's competitive. You need to be on the top of your game to attract talent. This is lazy, this is boring, this is desperate. Honestly, this is frustrating. There are so many wonderful recruiters out there that are given such a bad name by practices like this. Thankfully, in recent times I have noticed this is a rare occurrence and the incredible recruiters are now far outshining the bad ones.
Unfortunately the current market situation can make companies think they can demand more than they offer. What was the number of applicants for it? I bet while you were getting disappointed many were rushing to apply
Come to Netherlands. We need software engineers. You aren’t one? We make you one.
I would say that the same claim made by most tech-related companies can be reversed from the other side: if excellent software engineers by definition are *rare* *pearls*, good companies are even rarer. Except for some good software and hardware engineers, nobody else gives a sh*t about the quality of the tech field except for grabbing easy money. Sad but the naked truth these days.
Ryan Murphy did you reply?
Geez I’m sorry. I just thought you were ideal for the role
But MICROSOFT tech... Maybe there's C# in there 👀👀
Ryan good luck with the new Ruby job! I always thought you would make waves in Web 4.0. You will apply so much synergy in Microsoft's Google Teams.
This is just as bad as the cold emails from recruiters where the role is no where near my qualifications, or worse requires onsite and is 5 states away from where I live. In the old market where it was hard to find an engineer, I can understand this. But in this market with so much talent available, there's really no excuse for it. I see recruiters on LinkedIn all the time saying how they posted about an opening (not an official linkedIn job post, but a regular post) and they got 300-500 resumes.

5mo"I have noticed this is a rare occurrence and the incredible recruiters are now far outshining the bad ones." - If this is the case why not highlight the incredible recruiters? LinkedIn is full of negativity with layoffs and engineers/ companies struggling so instead of highlighting a negative interaction wouldn't it be best to speak about the positivity that is out there?
