Dear Connections, I am thrilled to share with you the publication of our latest research paper, which has just been published at the 2023 IEEE 21st Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD). Titled "Predicting Student Performance Through Classroom Concentration: A Review on Machine Learning and Computer Vision Approaches” In this study, we explore the potential of machine learning and computer vision to revolutionize the way we assess and predict student performance. By analyzing classroom concentration, a key indicator of academic success. We aim to provide educators with the tools to identify students who may be at risk of underperforming or dropping out. This early detection allows for timely interventions that can significantly impact a student's educational journey. Our research highlights the use of cutting-edge technologies such as facial recognition, pose estimation, and gaze tracking to monitor student behavior and attention spans in real-time. By integrating these technologies with advanced machine learning algorithms, we can not only predict student performance but also offer personalized support to enhance learning outcomes. Chanakya Pandya, a junior Physics, Computer Science, and Mathematics triple major, has been named a 2024 Goldwater Scholar. This is the premier undergraduate award for students intending a research career in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering. “Physics, computer science, and mathematics are already very interlinked,” Pandya said. “It was through doing research in high school that I realized just how helpful a strong background in computer science would be” for understanding physics, while “learning new math to describe the physical phenomena that I've been working with has helped me combine my three passions into one directed goal.” Congratulations Chanakya, from all of us at CEC! Learn more about Chanakya, along with the other two Miami University students who were honored with this prestigious award, in this article: https://bit.ly/3xPspCp
