Kick the can. Its lighter and brighter in my part of the world and for the cubs, this means outside activities. Kick the can is their favourite game to play. The rules are simple - 1) The cubs have to hide 2) The leaders then have to try and find them. 3) If they are spotted the leader has to run (yes run) back to the can (milk carton filled with stones) and say their name before the cub reaches it. 4) That cub if beaten is then in prison. 5) If a cub beats a leader back to the can first, they kick it and release all of the captured cubs. 6) Leaders are not allowed to "doggy guard" this means wait by the can. 7) its not a real prison of course as no crime has been commited, just a bunch of cones. This is a simple game that teaches them patience, team building and gives them confidence by demonstrating they can thrash a 54 year old man in a running race. "Where on the field is the $1 I'm paying for soda?" A famous scene from Moneyball where newly acquired DH David Justice asks why General Manager Billy Beane charges for soda in the club house. Jonah Hill's fictionalized character Peter Brand replies that "Billy likes to keep the money on the field" While the ownership of the soon to be Las Vegas A's is notoriously stingy, this scene was actually total creative liberty but it made a point that is relatable to many who work in the nonprofit world. When staff at nonprofits are forced to work with broken chairs, slow computers, and chronic understaffing, these things don't actually put more money into the program. They're symbolic sacrafices to demonstrate commitment to fans (donors) and more often than not management. There's a reason professional sports teams don't try and save money by having their players workout at local High School gyms. The reputational damage would make it more difficult to recruit players. What do we think it does to employee recruitment and retention in the nonprofit sector when the industry is defined by symbolic (and sometimes quite literal) vows of poverty? Great missions require great people and resources that allow them to perform at their best. Your soda money doesn't end up back on the field but it can pull money off of it if your badge of honor sacrafices conribute to employee turnover.

“Did you grow up around horses, Vikash?” That really made me chuckle. I grew up in a flat above a newsagents; not much space for horses there. The closest I got was when Geoff would come into the shop every Saturday (that’s how I earned my money). He’d buy the Mirror, 10 Silk Cut, and give me a tip on the 3:30 at Kempton or similar. But I’d had such a nice conversation with Jayne about horses and British Eventing That it made her genuinely ask that question. 1️⃣ Understand people’s passions. This is really the best part of my job. Hearing people talk about what they love the most. That becomes the basis of their financial plan. How to do, have, and enjoy more of that passion. I then have to bridge the gap between where they are now And where they want to be. But the bonus for me? I get to hear people talk about the things they absolutely love the most. To the extent that I become somewhat well-versed in those things. Horses ✅ Classic Cars ✅ Family Dynamics ✅ Certain Charity Causes ✅ Tabletop Miniature Boardgames ✅ 2️⃣ Being interested is more important than being interesting. This is a biggie. If you’d replayed that conversation with Jayne, you’d notice I didn’t actually do much talking. I asked questions. The right questions. That I’d learned from point 1️⃣. ♻️ If you spend enough time talking to people about what they love, you can understand everything you need to about that topic. Because you are hearing the absolute best version of it. Combine that with the ability to genuinely be interested, ask the right questions and listen - and you can’t go far wrong in creating meaningful interactions and relationships. ☺️
