I'm pumped about the opportunity to attend the IEEE Power & Energy Society Conference next week! These types of events never fail to energize both my personal and professional development. Gaining insight and perspective from the event and then carrying that momentum into our content always adds value to our message that can be passed throughout the workforce. A few concepts I consider when attending events and conferences: - Making new connections and strengthening existing ones. - Research speakers and session topics ahead of time. Allowing me time to actively listen and be present during the event. - Can I incorporate any information and insight taken from the event and make it a part of the podcast? - Are any exhibitors highlighting solutions or technology that is relevant to the workforce and/or our audience? - Be up to date on current topics and sports to engage in small talk. - Gather enough information to recap the event to the team and summarize the experience in a post. With the rapidly increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) and EVs in the residential electricity sector, it is important for utilities to have visibility over those behind-the-meter (BTM) assets. These assets may not properly contribute to benefit the premises or to the grid if they are not managed optimally; instead, their suboptimal operation may jeopardize grid operations or deprive the grid and the premises from receiving the maximum possible benefits. Besides, there are controllable loads such as HVAC and Electric Water Heater (EWH) in the premises that can be coordinated with DER and EV operations. With the advent of grid edge control and communication technologies, optimal frameworks for independent operation of assets and information exchange between the premises and the utility can provide a better understanding on premises flexibility and possible operation for grid services. In this T&D panel, we assemble experts from the industry, academia, national labs, and government to discuss the state-of-the-art in progress, challenges, and opportunities in grid edge technologies and hierarchical control related to BTM DERs providing grid services through the lens of existing initiatives. It was a pleasure to speak at IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) T&D Conference on the work the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is doing to explore how electric vehicles (EVs) can be integrated to support Ontario's electricity system. Amongst many great topics, my key takeaways from the conference were: 1. Grid edge technologies are no longer an option but a necessity for utilities to maintain an affordable and reliable grid; regulatory frameworks can be instrumental in supporting the integration of these technologies 2. In a high inverter-based resource (IBR) future, grid forming inverters (GFM) play an important role - GFM are already available in BESS inverters today and can be a cost-effective way to support bulk power system stability under high IBR penetration 3. The process of converting power from AC to DC in level 2 and level 3 DC fast chargers can generate harmonic distortion and voltage imbalance at levels that can disrupt charging, distort utility voltage supply and damage equipment - an important consideration when installing EV supply equipment. Collaboration is key to understanding and addressing these challenges, and leveraging them as opportunities to support the energy transition.
