When I say "eating disorder", you probably picture a girl. A young, white, emaciated, cis girl. Yet anorexia only accounts for 8% of eating disorder cases - and less than 6% of those with eating disorders are “underweight". • Men also have eating disorders. • LGBTQ+ folk are more likely to have an eating disorder. • Youth with chronic health conditions have a higher risk of eating disorders. • Black teenagers are 50% more likely than white teenagers to exhibit binge and purge behaviours. Why is this important? Because stigmas create barriers to accessing support. 👉 3 in 5 people don’t seek mental health support because they’re concerned about how people would perceive them. 👉 52% of people from racially minoritised groups feel confident asking for help from healthcare professionals (vs 64% of white people). 👉 Early intervention is key for someone with an eating disorder; it gives them the greatest chance of recovery. *That* is why challenging stigma matters. Today is Transgender Day of Visibility. About 1 in 5 people have one mental health issue within any given year. Rates within the transgender community are even higher. There are different reasons why trans people are more likely to have mental health concerns. Sadly, most of them relate to living in a world that’s not kind to people who are transgender. Instead of being loved and respected for who they are, people who are transgender often experience bias, prejudice & discrimination. If you have mental health concerns, support from friends and family, and even a therapist can make all the difference. There are things you can do to support your mental wellbeing. Visit the link below for resources and more info about mental health in the transgender community. https://lnkd.in/gXyQ3ia #TransgenderDayOfVisibility

In the mental health industry, the competency of care for transgender, intersex, and gender-diverse individuals often falls short. As an open transgender woman in recovery and a dedicated mental health professional, I am committed to bridging this gap by offering invaluable training to treatment facilities. Through this training, participants will gain a deep understanding of gender diversity, including terminology and the spectrum of identities beyond the binary. I delve into the challenges and barriers my community faces, addressing issues such as stigma, discrimination, and access to care. Emphasizing the importance of culturally competent care, I explore strategies for creating affirming environments and tailoring treatment approaches to meet clients' diverse needs. I also cover practical communication skills, trauma-informed care practices, and ethical considerations in depth. Moreover, participants will be equipped with resources and support networks better to serve transgender, intersex, and gender-diverse individuals. Together, we can foster a more inclusive and compassionate mental health landscape where everyone feels respected and supported on their journey towards healing.
