THE secret to making a great first hire ... I've had a lot of great conversations recently about building development teams. Here's the TLDR; Your first hire will be either an analyst or project manager - the key is to hire for your weakness. Your 2nd hire will likely be an accountant to manage bank draws and project accounting. 3rd hire? Either an analyst (if you didn't hire one already) or an asset manager to support stabilized portfolio assets. Not included in the video - as the Principal, you will likely own fundraising for quite a while.

"What have you done the whole week?" "What did you do last month?" When an employee is asked such questions, they often find themselves blanking out, with memories fading and self-doubt creeping in, leaving them unable to respond to their seniors with the necessary facts and data in hand. To armor oneself against such probing questions, I've learned a skill that helps me deal with unexpected inquiries. I maintain an hourly tracker of my daily tasks and then convert that into weekly data (pre and post lunch). Benefits: 1. I can always hold myself accountable for my actions. 2. I can provide tangible data to my seniors when queried. 3. My confidence is bolstered by having this data readily available. 4. I can effectively demonstrate my value to my seniors, aiding in performance appraisals. 5. My brain is freed up to focus on execution rather than remembering details. One of my seniors once told me, "You can prove your worth only when you know it." Subconsciously, I used to wonder, "How does one know their worth?" I believe the dots connect backward, and maintaining daily/hourly/weekly trackers is the answer.

Speaker & Coach | Industry Thought Leader | Empowering Financial Advisors to Enhance Business Performance & Deliver Humanized Advice | 27+ Years of Experience in Training for Effortless Sales & Client Success 💰📈
[MY STORY, PART 1] How being a broke university grad working nights shifts at a factory turned into a 30+ year, highly successful career in the financial services industry: In 1993 my life took an unexpected turn. I had just graduated university with a Bachelor's of Education in Science and Math when my daughter arrived. (and no, that’s not the unexpected turn – keep reading for that) I had no teaching job lined up, so I shelved my dream of being an educator and took a job working the night shift at a factory cleaning dust off the machines to support my new family. I hated working nights. I hated doing the same thing and having the same conversations at the factory, day in and day out. ...I'm also allergic to wood and dust, so that was no fun 🤧 It was during this rough period of my life that fate intervened in the form of my insurance agent. He told me I needed to update my program, to which I replied, “But I don’t have any money,” mildly panicking. Much to my surprise, he responded with: "Well, you'd be amazing at what I do!" With nothing to lose and everything to gain, I took a leap of faith and entered the financial services industry. Many important people in my life greeted this decision with comments like, “You’re crazy getting into that! You could be a vice principal!” But my heart kept pulling me towards financial advisory. The only problem was… I had NO idea what I was doing 😳 I didn’t understand sales processes or how to build client relationships… I didn't know or understand the industry - at all. [Stay tuned to find out how that turned around in part 2] _________ 🙋♂️ Any newer financial advisors feeling imposter syndrome (or heck even advisors with years under their belt)?!
