Two key takeaways from our recent BriefCASE newsletter: 1️⃣ The UN's new #automotive #cybersecurity regulation has implications beyond in-vehicle considerations, requiring extensive organizational effort and potentially high costs. Consequently, #OEMs are now focused on embedding security into vehicle design and ensuring compliance to avoid penalties and withdrawal of regulatory approval. 2️⃣ In the midterm, however, OEMs cannot discontinue all legacy platforms, and they must bear the cost of making #vehicles compliant, especially high-volume platforms that are planned to continue for several years. Figure 1 displays the relative exposure of OEMs to these “retrofit” compliance costs. Read more: https://okt.to/cN6Ln1

🚨 Software Updates While Vehicles are in Motion: A Serious Cybersecurity Concern 🚨 As vehicles become increasingly connected, Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates offer great convenience. However, performing updates while a vehicle is in motion raises significant cybersecurity and safety concerns. Imagine the risks if a cyberattack were to exploit vulnerabilities during an update process while the vehicle is on the road. Such scenarios could lead to: 🔒 Unauthorized access to critical systems ⚠️ Unexpected malfunctions or system crashes 🚗 Loss of control or compromised vehicle safety features At HackersEra, we believe cybersecurity must be a top priority in every phase of automotive development, from design to deployment. Secure update mechanisms should be a must, ensuring updates occur only when it’s safe and not while the vehicle is in motion. It’s time we rethink how we handle software updates in the automotive world. Safety and security should never be an afterthought. #Cybersecurity #AutomotiveSecurity #VehicleSafety #HackersEra #OTA #ConnectedVehicles

Why rely on Security through Obscurity when you wouldn’t leave your car keys on the tire while you’re away? 🧐 This sounds absurd, but it’s shockingly similar to what researchers uncovered in Kia vehicles. A simple vulnerability allowed attackers to remotely control a car using only the VIN number. This vulnerability wasn’t about some advanced hacking technique—it was a case of poor system design. Traditional industries like automotive, aviation, and healthcare are becoming more connected, but they often lack security expertise during design and development. The result? More attack surfaces and increased risks to a real human life. When security is neglected, the consequences go beyond financial losses—lives are at stake. In this case, weak API protections allowed hackers to manipulate critical car systems with minimal effort, illustrating the need for robust security protocols, particularly in life-critical industries. **Security through obscurity is not a strategy**—we must integrate security into every phase of product development, especially in industries where safety is non-negotiable.
