For those in the Military Having a competent team  Could be the difference between life and death They understand that you’re only as strong as your weakest link. Which means they ALL reach an impeccable standard of physical and mental training. Anything less would be a detriment to the mission and the team. When people are sleeping, make sure they have circadian-friendly watch rotations. They have normal days. So I would carefully worry about the manning on the flight deck, so people get adequate sleep. And we got better. 'We’re still doing a lot of briefs and passing on the lessons learned all the way down to the software-level detail. '... I probably signed 2,000 different types of awards for my own sailors ... doing their job without any knowledge of when they would go home for nine months in a threat weapons engagement zone. And they made things happen in combat to help save lives. So let’s reward them amply. 'Morale is not necessarily happiness. Morale is something deeper. It’s spiritual. It’s about motivation. It’s highly tied to job satisfaction. 'Food’s important ... we had ice cream socials every single week, of course, taco Tuesdays, pizza on Saturdays, things that you could look forward to. And then resiliency is also tied to morale. 'And then finally, having the Wi-Fi ... a game-changer ... allowed people to near instantaneously ... talk to their external support network, the people that care about you ... especially after nine months of deployment. 'A lot of our training is focused on ethics and character building, and that’s all important. But that next step is how do you transform an organization? 'Having fallen far behind China in shipbuilding, the U.S. is turning to allies in South Korea and Japan for the turnaround strategy. Key to that effort is attracting companies such as Hyundai that go head-to-head with the Chinese and can do everything America lacks: making ships quickly at low costs with modern techniques. China’s naval battleship fleet now outnumbers the U.S.’s, having ramped up production at state-subsidized shipyards that build all types of vessels. A majority of the world’s ship output last year came from China. Coming in at No. 2 was South Korea, with roughly a quarter of global deliveries.   The U.S. barely registers on the global rankings. '

Today, I spoke at a very insightful Think Tank on localization of defense in the Middle East and learned a lot from the experiences of successful industry veterans like Bernard J. Dunn and Tim Grant. Thank you, gents, for participating and Michael (Mike) Rowe for moderating. Sharing a few points discussed here: Mode of Market Entry Partnership is the key market entry route moving forward, but the type of partnership depends on the nature of the product, the company’s risk appetite, current market presence, and connections. Potential modes to execute are - 1. Partnering with indigenous companies 2. Increasing market prospects by sharing equity 3. Piggybacking on an established Western OEM’s kit 4. Partnerships with Family Groups in Saudi Arabia Industry challenges 1. Understanding the overarching strategy and priorities that guide defense modernization 2. Delineating optimal ways to share technology, engineering know-how, and IP 3. Lack of market knowledge and how to navigate various government entities 4. Testing and demonstration costs - often borne by the OEM 5. Protracted decision timelines 6. Not having the right feet on the ground Examples of localization success 1. Trust & Safety Operations are almost exactly like Military Operations: an ambiguous problem set, a determined opposition, and a need for effective planning and execution. Values rally people together, but we don’t win a campaign by simply waving the flag. In war it is agility, process and training that overcome; thus it is the same when battling online harms.
