The Navy should retain the Ticonderoga-class cruisers until a suitable replacement is available to ensure continuity of critical capabilities and operational presence. These cruisers offer a unique blend of air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and land attack capabilities that are essential for maintaining maritime superiority and force projection. Retaining them until a new platform is ready would prevent any capability gaps and maintain a robust and versatile naval force. Keeping the Ticonderoga-class cruisers longer ensures that the Navy can continue to leverage their proven performance and contribute effectively to global security until a suitable successor is fully operational and integrated into the fleet.

Wonderful piece by Sandy… Logistics and Distributed Lethality Today, the U.S. Navy operates using a modern doctrine of ‘distributed lethality’ – more ships, with more weapons, more widely dispersed. With this operating concept permanently in place, the requirement to support an expanding network of deployed and ashore naval forces calls for increasing the numbers of combat logistics forces and modernizing them sooner rather than later. https://buff.ly/3wf3vvd Some long-awaited and welcome news today with the release of the Government's blueprint for the future development of the Navy's Surface Combatant Fleet. Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Pat Conroy MP stated: “This significant advancement in Navy capability that will be delivered under this plan requires a strong, sovereign defence industry. “This plan ensures Navy’s future fleet can meet our strategic circumstances by delivering a larger and more lethal fleet sooner and secures the future of naval shipbuilding in Australia, supporting 3,700 direct jobs over the next decade and thousands of indirect jobs for decades to come.” The independent analysis of Navy’s surface combatant fleet emphasised the need for immediate action to boost Navy’s air defence, long-range strike, presence and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. We look forward to hearing more over the coming days and weeks of how this will translate into priority programs for both acquisition and sustainment initiatives.

Since 2017, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has commissioned a new class of ocean surveillance vessel into its order of battle: the Type 927. Similar in design and function to the U.S. Navy’s Victorious and Impeccable class T-AGOS ships, the Type 927 was introduced to help remedy the PLAN’s longstanding weakness in anti-submarine warfare. The PLAN has likely built six Type 927 ships to date, most based for easy access to the South China Sea. In peacetime, these ships use their towed array sonar to collect acoustic data on foreign submarines and track their movements within and beyond the first island chain. In wartime, Type 927 vessels could contribute to PLAN anti-submarine warfare operations in support of a range of different maritime campaigns.
