PH21 Gallery presents: 'Feminine / Masculine' – A Curated International Photography Exhibition, April 4–27, 2024 - Portrayals of femininity and masculinity are, without a doubt, central to numerous art forms, with photography being no exception. The past few decades have sparked often heated discussions and criticisms of past, recent, and current photographic practices due to their lack of reflection on the assumptions, stereotypes, and prejudices surrounding approaches to femininity and masculinity. Both fine art and commercial works have been critiqued for the potential consequences of their approach and presentation. Historically, femininity and masculinity have been conceived as oppositions, complements to each other, or positions on a continuum, among other perspectives. There are scarcely any ways of portraying femininity and masculinity that would not be considered trivial, conservative, pretentious, demeaning, distasteful, clichéd, or even offensive by some. It often seems that everything has been said and photographed on this subject; however, it is impossible to ignore the persistence of the theme in our contemporary visual culture. What can we still value and possibly revive from the rich history of photography? Are there any novel ways left to approach this subject with a fresh critical eye? We welcome submissions from all photographers interested in this subject, aiming to showcase their work to a broader international audience through the exposure provided by PH21 Gallery. Continuation and conclusion of the report on my visit to the exhibition "Seeing Time in Colors" at the Centre Pompidou-Metz : 2. The Care of the Colors Section #12 reminds us that color fixation techniques appeared and evolved between the late 19th and early 20th centuries: there was Louis Duclos du Hauron's trichromy, Gabriel Lippmann's interferential method, and the Lumière brothers' autochromes... 🌈 This emergence of color provides a new perspective on the photographic recording of Reality. It allows archiving the planet in all its chromatic palette, as suggested by Albert Kahn's series in section #13. 🗺️ Thus, through the work of color in photography, artists have propelled this new visual medium into the academic field of Fine Arts. Section #14 highlights the Vivex process developed by Yevonde Middleton, whose aesthetic quality is demonstrated in the "Goddesses" series of 1935. 👩🎤 Section #15 also features numerous works by Saul Leiter, highlighting his ability to capture/construct life moments that become true pictorial compositions: the depth of field, the complexity of successive planes, and the colors of the Reality arranged within the frame of the lens like an impressionist painting, even though we are in a contemporary urban world. The same pictoriality emerges from the American photographers showcased in section #16, such as Joel Meyerowitz. 🖼️ Finally, the exhibition concludes with section #17 by questioning the reaction of painting to photography, which has continuously challenged it with a revolution in imagery. Sam Stourdzé concludes his reflective journey with Gerhard Richter's paintings which, not without a touch of derision, replicate the visual feats of photography through hyperrealistic metapicture (no less!), as a way of expressing that painting is not dead; as a manual work of the eye, it can indeed embrace the territory of photography and much more... 🧑🎨

The line between the worlds of fashion and art has always been blurry. Beyond Fashion, a new exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery, argues that fashion photography, once mired in the mucky world of commerce, has finally risen above its station to attain the status of art. On the surface, this seems to be a claim of form and practice. ‘Fashion photography has always played the role of both thief and magician,’ Rosalind Jana writes, ‘ransacking other photographic genres, pinching from paintings, sculptures, theatre and film to conjure a dreamworld in which clothes become costumes for a different kind of life and desires are enacted or ominously twisted.’ The bigger story here is of a once-overlooked corner of photography now enjoying not only the institutional exhibitions and expert critical commentary that confer real artistic gravity, but access to a different kind of commercial arena – the art market. Why might art and fashion, Jana asks, have reason for wanting to share the same bed? ‘Both are highly profitable industries for those at the top, who remain reliant on the exploitation of those at the bottom. Each thrives on a combination of perpetual novelty and valorising the dead. But they also possess qualities, or perhaps we can call them auras, that are useful to one another. Fashion, ever-changing creature that she is, likes to publicly justify her existence not by her shareholder value but her claims to artistry and visionary inspiration, her capacity to transform the wearer, fairytale-like, with a beautiful dress or must-have handbag. The artworld confers a useful legitimacy on her,’ Jana suggests, ‘a proximity… to the deeper cultural substance she may lack. In return, art is graced both with fashion’s conveniently deep pockets and a sprinkle of her glamour, or her cool, or the associated sheen of her household brand-name recognition.’ Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5jwkeCP

In our studio, you can step out of the traditional bedroom setting with various sets, and of course, there are endless possibilities beyond the studio. A boudoir session is more than just creating a pretty picture. Combined with the transformative experience, it can be life-changing.

The theme of "Openings" can be interpreted in various ways. Photographs that relate to this theme may showcase physical openings such as doorways, windows, or tunnels, or metaphorical openings such as opportunities, beginnings, or breakthroughs. 3 advantages photobooks have over exhibitions and why photographers should consider making a photo book... 1. CONTROL OVER THE PRESENTATION An exhibition is always influenced by the space in which it is presented. The size of the room, number of walls, quality of lighting, everything about a permanent physical space will determine what's possible when it comes to exhibiting anything. Then there is how the works are arranged, proximity of the prints to one another, and how people choose to walk around the space. Books are fixed. The artist determines the size, order the images are arranged, and has more control over how the work will be presented. 2. EXHIBITIONS ARE TEMPORARY, BOOKS ARE PERMANENT An exhibition might be on display for 4-6 weeks, depending on the venue and size of the show. Once the exhibition has finished, audiences have to wait until the next exhibition for an opportunity to see the printed work again. You can't visit an exhibition from last month, last year or last century. But a book of the work is possible to see today as well as years from now. Photo books are like portable exhibitions that are always open. 3. PHOTOBOOKS ARE MORE ACCESSIBLE THAN PRINTS Photo books are available for under $100 even if they're self published & in limited quantities. Editioned prints can be 10 times that. Which puts your art out of reach of most of your audience who would like to support what you do. This isn't to say you can't still make prints of your work. Of course you still have to have exhibitions, print your work, and present it as it should be seen. PH21 Gallery presents: 'Vision and Expression: the art of photography' @ Barcelona – A Curated International Photography Exhibition - Although photography initially emerged as a technological invention, it quickly evolved into an expressive artistic practice. Pictorialist photographs from the nineteenth century were crafted to resemble paintings, while proponents of straight photography in the early twentieth century aimed for a purely photographic approach to conveying meaning. Street photographers dedicated the medium to capturing fleeting moments, and in the latter part of the twentieth century, many photographers embraced staging and directing to employ photography as a means of artistic visual communication. Straight photography derives expressive meaning from the observed scene, while directorial, or staged photography involves creating a scene based on a preconceived notion. Art photography today encompasses various genres and creative practices, ranging from portraiture, landscape, and still life to staged, abstract, and conceptual photography. More recently, AI-generated photo-based images have also asserted their presence in the art photography scene. In this call, we invite contemporary photographers to demonstrate their understanding of photography as an expressive fine art practice in the twenty-first century.
