Nick and Charlie A SUNDAY TIMES TOP 5 CHILDREN'S BESTSELLER A short novella based on the beloved characters from Alice Oseman's acclaimed debut novel Solitaire and graphic novel series Heartstopper - now a major Netflix series. From the author of the 2021 YA Book Prize winning Loveless. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? CHARLIE: "I have been going out with Nick Nelson for two years. He likes rugby, Formula 1, dogs, the Marvel universe, the sound felt-tips make on paper, rain and drawing on shoes. He also likes me." NICK: "Things me and Charlie Spring do together include: Watch films. Sit in the same room on different laptops. Text each other from different rooms. Make out. Make food. Make drinks. Get drunk. Talk. Argue. Laugh. Maybe we're kind of boring. But that's fine with us." Everyone knows that Nick and Charlie are the perfect couple - that they're inseparable. But now Nick is leaving for university, and Charlie will be left behind at Sixth Form. Everyone's asking if they're staying together, which is a stupid question - they're 'Nick and Charlie' for God's sake! But as the time to say goodbye gets inevitably closer, both Nick and Charlie question whether their love is strong enough to survive being apart. Or are they delaying the inevitable? Because everyone knows that first loves rarely last forever... https://lnkd.in/gA86cvcs

This message, from our CEO Alice Knapp, appears in our February newsletter. I have recently had conversations with several avid e-book readers who are disappointed in our offerings. In some cases, the complaint was that a series was incomplete, or it had to do with the wait times for a new bestseller. The e-book model for libraries is very different from collecting physical items. We can purchase a book at a substantial discount, and it stays on our shelves. We purchase multiple copies of the bestsellers to try to keep the wait times low. For e-materials, libraries can’t purchase these titles, they must lease them. Bestsellers are only available at a high cost ($65 to $109 for a new titles), with a limited use (26 borrows and then we need to lease the title again if we want it in the collection). It is almost impossible to maintain a popular series, so the titles early in the series are often missing. What can you do? Please let us know when you cannot find a book that you want. We want to meet your needs. Just as important, let your state representatives know that this is an area of concern. There may be legislation to help address this situation. Here's how you can find find your state legislator. https://lnkd.in/ehdErP3

Our current issue, 'On Sadness' (vol. 28, no. 5) is now available to purchase as a hard copy via the CPR online bookshop at bit.ly/onsadnessshop This issue is edited by After Performance, a research collective formed in 2015 and consisting of Felipe Cervera, Alvin Eng Hui Lim, Ella Parry-Davies and Matthew Yoxall. 'We invited authors to (re)consider the relationships between sadness and performance, in particular through complicating performance studies’ established focus on efficacy, action and change. We asked instead, how might sadness re-articulate performance as ‘bearing with’ rather than ‘moving on’? Contributions in the issue take up the encounters between performance and sadness, mourning, melancholia, grief, grievance and critical negativity, in particular as they are formed through experiences of race, queerness, disability, decoloniality and the precarity of artistic labour. Together, they explore what sadness makes thinkable or possible when mobilised as a theory or practice of performance.'

This is the nature of polarization at any level of our human system. Each side is full of scary and negative presumptions about the other and is sure that if the other side takes over something disastrous will happen.
