The power of strong community, learning and development and team culture is so important early in your career – it’s why we host quarterly live events for all of our consultants. Last week, we welcomed 30 of our consultants to our Winter Warmer. It's always phenomenal to see the Technology Academy community in action and Friday’s event was no different. It’s a great reminder of the benefits of bringing together our cohorts to drive knowledge-sharing, inclusion and a sense of community that is currently lacking in the technology industry. Susan Hallam MBE gave an inspiring keynote and shared advice for focusing on your own "North Star" and the steps you can take to get there, including: 🌟 Praise makes you feel good, critique makes you better 🌟 Perfect is the enemy of good 🌟 Blow your own trumpet 🌟 Say yes! Even (and especially) if it pushes you outside of your comfort zone 🌟 Trust is key – make sure you can be counted on A huge thanks to Susan for her words of wisdom. The consultants used their takeaways from Susan’s session for a group goal-setting exercise, where they reflected on 2023 and looked ahead to set their goals for 2024. Bringing our talented technologists together is something we prioritise at Technology Academy, as we know the power that community can have when it comes to personal development, diversity and inclusion and confidence. We can’t wait for the next one 🚀 #TechnologySkills #TechnologyCareers

Grateful for the past two years shared with these exceptional founders and lifelong friends. I joined Alexis Ohanian Sr. and 776 Foundation fellows in Austin last week for our second annual on-site trip. I had the immense pleasure of meeting the 2023 cohort, and in just a week the 2024 application cycle will close. I started my journey with 776 by taking the leap to apply for the inaugural cohort, with no idea of what to expect. Over two years, I've had many young founders ask for my advice in applying. Having participated in the initial applicant review, here are my suggestions: -Apply with a concrete idea, project, or business pitch. It's ok if your idea evolves or pivots over time, but start with a clear vision. -Make as much progress as possible. Have a burning passion but feel that it's not "real" yet? Start with research, customer discovery, or expert interviews. Anything to build your knowledge and track record. -Show your personality. Ambition, hustle, and good-nature matters more than a list of accolades, let that shine through. I would love to see more ocean solutionists in the next cohort, if you're thinking of applying, my DMs are open!

It’s pretty common, I think, to attend a conference and wish you could be in 2-3 places at once. At #JFFHorizons, I legitimately felt like I could have been in 4-5, maybe more, spots simultaneously and still not have soaked up all the content, meetups, and policy convenings I wanted to take in. That doesn't include the most valuable part of any conference: the scheduled and chance hallway and lobby conversations with old friends, partners, clients, and colleagues. This was my first time at Jobs for the Future (JFF)'s workforce and education summit. Because of travel issues — the IT outage was no joke for Delta — I didn’t get to experience the full breadth of content and meetings I was planning on. But I did pick up on, with fresh eyes and ears, some patterns and themes in the language that the social impact, workforce, and education leaders in attendance were using. Notable terms I heard often in my 1.5 days at the conference: 1️⃣ Skills-first (instead of skills-based). Which suggests that skills-focused hiring and training is the first but not only approach that companies, institutions, and communities should be considering. 2️⃣ Durable skills (also human skills and foundational skills). I didn’t hear one mention of soft skills. Other key terms and themes I heard a lot, through my lens working for a leading labor market analytics firm, Lightcast: ✅ Multiple pathways to connect talent to opportunity (see the skills-first note above) ✅ Outcomes, outcomes, outcomes ✅ Longitudinal data ✅ Changing skills and the future of work ✅ AI and digital literacy ✅ Career exploration Lastly, one of my highlights was attending the “No Dead Ends” policy breakfast that featured Maria Flynn interviewing Sen. Kaine and Rep. Smucker. Both were confident WIOA reauthorization could get done by the end of session. But more than this and other legislation nuggets they shared, I was struck by their passion for and roots in CTE, the skilled trades, and non-degree options — all of which will be critical to address the deepening labor deficits we’ll see in coming years. Great to connect with: Paul Fain Clare Bertrand, M.S.Ed Joel Simon Bill Hughes Nilda Blanco, MPA Efrem Bycer Faye Davis Heather McKay Laura Ward Matt Sigelman Ashley Wilhelm Earl Buford Matt Waltz Paula Nissen Layla O'Kane Papia Debroy Gina Rosen, PhD Sarah Miller Vallieres, PhD Kelli-Marie Ethan Pollack Derek Ozkal, MBA Sacha Litman Thankful for my colleagues who joined me in zipping up and down the escalators at the Marriott Marquis in DC: Stephen Lynch Caroline Landis Joshua LaFon Chris Kibarian.
