💫 Today we celebrate the adoption of the United Nations Charter. 💠 After two shattering world wars, 50 nations came together to revive, strengthen and amplify the spirit of the League of Nations. The United Nations Charter was adopted in 1945 with an intense aspiration for peace, prosperity and human rights. 🌸 It was a sincere initiative, driven by human beings, anchored in the deep individual and collective values of a generation that had suffered the ravages of conflict. 🔵 How do I know? My Dad told me. He was there as a young diplomat, representative of Ethiopia, in the early years of the establishment of this new international organization that would provide the mechanisms to preserve peace and create prosperity. He told me stories of real people, their passion and hard work to make this happen. With other diplomats he later contributed to the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Thanks to what I learned from him, the origins of the UN are not an abstraction for me, but tales of lived experience. 🔷 Has the United Nations lived up to its aspirations? Not always from a political perspective for sure. The nations of the world need to do much more to empower this organization to achieve its goals of peace and prosperity. But the various agencies and programs constantly accomplish a lot to better the world. Imagine a world without the work of the humanitarian programs like UNICEF or the international treaties signed through technical agencies like ITU. 🔷 As always, it's easy to criticize, but let's remember that the United Nations is still the only place where all nations can engage in global conversations about the state of the world, it's all we've got really. And these conversations often yield good outcomes although we rarely hear about them in the news. 🔷 The UN might seem like something far away from your daily life, not your concern, but look at the state of the world, today it is more important than ever to strengthen this organization that protects our rights as global citizens to live a decent, safe, and hopefully thriving existence. 🔴 We can start by simply acknowledging the importance of the adoption of the United Nations Charter, certainly a momentous promise made to world! Follow the link in UNOG's post below and just read the Preamble, it says it all. Then share it, and talk about it with your friends. 🧡 Have a great and inspiring day! "We the Peoples of the United Nations..." On this day, 79 years ago, the United Nations Charter was adopted. 50 nations came together in San Francisco to create a new organization for peace, prosperity and human rights. The values of the Charter resonate as strongly today as they did in 1945. https://lnkd.in/e3WphD8
