🚀 Composites Breaking Boundaries 🚀 Let's talk about ✨Recyclable Thermoset CFRP Composite Bike✨ Swancor won JEC Composites Innovation Awards in 2023 for its “Recyclable Thermoset CFRP Composite Bike”. This thermoset CFRP bicycle was made from recyclable EzCiclo prepreg. Composite parts can be recycled by CleaVER liquid to reclaim resin and fiber enabling closed-loop recycling of thermoset composite. EzCiclo is a recyclable epoxy resin. Hot melt prepregs made of EzCiclo RB-564 with different Fiber Average Weight (FAW) are used to produce composite bicycle parts including frame, handlebar, front fork and rims. The End-of-life composite parts made from EzCiclo can be degraded by CleaVER liquid at 130°C-150°C for 4 hours, enabling complete separation of matrix and fiber. The crosslinked matrix is dissolved in CleaVER and can be reused. The reclaimed fiber shows comparable properties compared to virgin fiber. 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐄-𝐛𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬 Replacing steel and aluminum with injection-molded plastics and localized supply chains are emerging trends among e-bike manufacturers. E-bike production today is dominated by aluminum and steel. These materials, and often the bikes themselves, are primarily sourced from Asia. To gain a competitive edge, however, “OEMs are exploring new materials to reduce cost, enhance manufacturing efficiency, improve design and functionality, and offer more sustainable solutions,” said Megan Powers, global marketing manager for life solutions at advanced polymers supplier Syensqo (formerly part of Solvay). Local, plastics-centric production also benefits the environment, which can be a selling point for e-bike buyers. In fact, Syensqo has conducted an internal lifecycle assessment, which shows that using specialty polymer injection molding for the e-bike frame component specifically reduces global warming potential by about 70% compared with traditional aluminum manufacturing. “Eco-conscious consumers are driving demand for sustainable urban transportation,”, adding that plastics also can deliver personalization and design improvements. “Injection molding [of colored compounds for the e-bike] cuts down on post-production operations like painting and polishing, which are essential tasks when making metal frames to prevent corrosion and to achieve a polished look,” noted Syensqo. “Additionally, the ease of adding new functionalities allows OEMs to quickly innovate and adapt to new design trends and requirements in the fast-paced e-bike market,”. #plastics #injectionmolding #manufacturing #ebikes

I love the ongoing debate in our forum about sustainability in packaging. The professor brought up two interesting examples: PUMA Group's clever little bag and Twig Teas packaging by Studio Thomas. I think that many companies aiming for true sustainability should consider whether their packaging encourages reuse. Our primary goal should be to minimize waste creation. While recycling is an option, it still requires energy and resources. Opting for brandless (or at least a little bit brandless) or neutral packaging designs can significantly increase the likelihood of reuse rather than disposal. #packagingdesign #graphicdesign #sustainable

E-waste could now be seen as a potential treasure trove of materials, fueling innovation and sustainability. Jewelry brands like EMBLEME are transforming electronic waste into valuable resources. By sourcing gold from electronic components found in discarded smartphones and computers, they address the growing issue of e-waste, which reached 7.8 kg per person in 2022, with only a quarter being recycled, according to UNITAR. Other initiatives are emerging globally, such as the Formula E Envision Racing team's competition encouraging students to build miniature race cars from e-waste, and Gomi's creation of speakers from non-recyclable plastic bags and lithium batteries.
