We started Defense Unicorns 3.5 years ago to solve one simple problem: making it easy to deliver software in air-gapped, secure environments. It's cool to see the fruits of these efforts as we continue to grow our suite of open-source tools, which enable us to deliver critical capabilities at the speed of threat. Seriously, this is one of the hardest delivery contexts there is. If we can solve this, we can solve anything.

The US Space Force awarded Slingshot Aerospace $1.9 million to further develop technology that detects where and when nefarious actors are jamming global positioning systems. Adversaries can use GPS jamming to reduce combat effectiveness and wreak havoc on commercial industry.

Last month, the 18th Space Defense Squadron added a satellite to the Satellite Catalog. Object 61446 is a fifth piece of a Vanguard launch from 1959! This makes me wonder where has it been all of this time, and how do they know what launch an item is from? One thing I looked at was - has it been maintained as an Analyst Satellite for a while? That appears to not be the case since there were no (I don't have a comprehensive list of Analyst Satellites, just a snapshot once in a while) obvious candidates. So I applied my RAAN Test to see if it has the same RAAN precession that the other two known pieces of that launch do - and it is close. The RAAN precession is very dependent on inclination so anything with a similar inclination will be close. Satellite number 11 is the payload and satellite number 12 is the upper stage. So far there have only been three unique TLEs (orbital parameters) released, this is not too unusual for a small piece of debris. I am gonna keep an eye on this object. Probably I should add that I graph the Right Ascension of Ascending Node for the various satellites (that is the RAAN Test) and contend that they should be nearly parallel IF they are actually from the same launch. Are these parallel enough? I am not sure. But at least it appears that 61446 is an actual object.

🪐 The last week in the Commercial Space Industry 🌍 🚀 Blue Origin has announced that it has scheduled its latest New Shepard flight for no earlier than the 28th of January at 11 am Eastern. The vehicle will carry 30 payloads but no passengers. 🛰️ AST SpaceMobile has raised $400mn through a convertible debt to ramp up manufacturing for its direct-to-smartphone constellation. 📡On January 22nd, Rocket Lab announced it will launch eight of OroraTech’s smallsats on an Electron rocket from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand. This constellation of satellites detects and monitors wildfires, providing early warnings of fires to alert first responders. 🚀 The U.S. Space Force’s Commercial Satellite Communications Office (CSCO) has announced contracting opportunities worth approximately $2.3 billion for commercial satellite services over the coming year. 🛡️ Redwire Space has expanded into defense with its $925 million purchase of Edge Autonomy. The space infrastructure company is acquiring a drone manufacturer whose technology has been deployed with Ukraine’s military forces.

The Air Force has the F-22 Raptor. The Navy has its Nimitz-class (CVN-68) aircraft carriers. The Army has the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Now the Space Force wants in on the name game, and is planning to start naming its satellites, radars, and other weapons recognizable names. Guardians can help. Chief of Space Operations Gen. B. Chance Saltzman’s latest “C-Note” memo to Guardians went out Oct. 25, inviting Guardians to put their heads together to come up with the best ways to identify USSF spacecraft. “How do we talk about our equipment in the Space Force?” Saltzman asked. “How do we name the systems we operate? Do those names accurately reflect the Guardian spirit—the space warfighting culture that we are working to build? I am not convinced that they do. But we are making strides to rectify that.” Space Force systems are typically known by clunky, unpronouncable acronyms—SBIRS for Space-Based Infrared System, or GSSAP for Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program, or SCN for Satellite Control Network. Naming them could make them more memorable and recognizable to the public. Last October, the Space Force established a new designation system for future platforms with Space Force Instruction 16-403, but that move did nothing to change existing naming conventions. “It is a tremendous step to move from where we are today,” Saltzman wrote in his C-Note, “to a world in which all our systems are named to reflect the culture of their operators.” The CSO asked Guardians to share ideas for satellite naming “themes” by Nov. 30. To prime the pump, he offered ideas of his own: “For example, should we name the systems within our Missile Warning and Tracking activities after birds of prey? Or systems within SATCOM activities after canines? Should we leverage mythology? Natural phenomena?” The service is not looking for names of specific platforms at this stage, but themes for these specific categories, an official told Air & Space Forces Magazine.
