Why do our Founding Fathers sound a whole lot like TERFs today? Probably because they believed what TERFs believe, that there are humans that are "lesser than." Our founding fathers in the U.S. also illustrate the fear that came with the feminine. As is today, colonial powers saw what would now be called queer men or trans-women as weak. Anything "effeminate" was lesser than. Catholics and Protestants alike believed gender fluidity was a symptom of a degraded society. When a people is "lesser" than, it's an easy justification to dehumanize and eradicate. We see many of these tactics today by the I$rael's right-wing government in G@z@. With this governing principle, the newly formed United States of America embarked on "a scorched earth" campaign to clear the land for resources and real estate deals. They justified the Trail of Tears, repressive and deadly native boarding schools, and constant settler violence because they deemed these societies as not fit to hold the land. (I hope the phrase Manifest Destiny takes on a new meaning for you. It's a phrase to retire from your vocabulary.) What I find interesting about Franklin and Jefferson's response is that it is so similar to anti-trans people today. They hold so much fear about gender! To them, it is the destruction of everything they hold dear. At the Judith Butler event a person who could be described as a TERF asked a question that was anti-trans. I could hear the quiver in their throat when sharing their gender fear. It was real for them! There is real fear behind this reactionary movement and that's ultimately the point. Today is Juneteenth Day. Juneteenth Day, also known as Emancipation Day, is to commemorate the day enslaved people in Texas, learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, 2.5 years after the change in legal status of 3.5 million African Americans from enslaved to free. However, we have work to do to ensure reparations, justice, and true freedom is achieved. I stand firmly for freedom of speech (when morally responsible). We should really be vigilant to protect this freedom as its crucial to the foundation of our democracy, which is more fragile than we can often realize. And I also sympathize with those who are joining demonstrations who merely want to see dignity for all people and a world of less violence and war. But if LGBTQ students are threatened with violence from homophobes, you shut it down! If students of Color are threatened with violence from white supremacists, you shut it down! If immigrant students are physically threatened by xenophobes, you shut it down! And, you know it shouldn’t be surprising to say that this, but if Jewish students are threatened by hostile, violent antisemites, then you shut it down! Those who don’t like that last part say “well, they’re not all antisemites. Some are just advocates for justice.” Well, if a portion of a protest is calling for “global intifada” (mass violence) and for freeing Palestine of Jews from the river to the sea (genocide) then you shut it down. If many of them are not just preaching violence but practicing violence on campus, you shut it down. If some are saying you kill all Zionists as valid “resistance,” you shut it down. We must defend responsible protest and we must also show no tolerance for violent movements built on hate. Students have the right to share their views (even distasteful ones) but students also have the right to be free from violence on their way to class. So grateful to all the non-Jewish allies who are standing for the security of our Jewish kids on campus. May we know better times. Let's stay united for freedom of speech, for peace, and for justice.

The central issue facing the American church is our lack of racial unity. Most white Christians miss and misunderstand the lived experience of black Christians. Thus, we don’t experience solidarity and don’t express empathy with each other’s experiences of perceived oppression. The body of Christ experiences more physical and relational racial segregation than secular society. Jesse Curtis lays much of the blame on evangelicalism applying the principles of the Church Growth Movement in the 1970s to grow the movement and revitalize evangelism. We pursued mega churches in “the suburbs targeting white Christians that wanted to segregate themselves from black people. The evangelical movement experienced rapid growth, in large part, because it avoided tackling discipleship issues related to racial equality, knowing that addressing those issues would make their congregants uncomfortable and slow church growth. To protect church growth, racial justice in the community and racial equality within evangelical institutions were ignored.” We fostered a political force that was lite on discipleship. We are now reaping what we sowed with our youth leaving the faith. If we are going to live into the unity that Jesus prayed for in John 17 we must start talking about issues of race. To do that, we must equip ourselves and our churches for those discussions. I'd say, okay, let's get with it, we'll all be nonviolent. But I don't go along with any kind of nonviolence unless everybody's going to be nonviolent. If they make the Ku Klux Klan nonviolent, I'll be nonviolent. If they make the White Citizens Council nonviolent, I'll be nonviolent. But as long as you've got somebody else not being nonviolent, I don't want anybody coming to me talking any nonviolent talk. I don't think it is fair to tell our people to be nonviolent unless someone is out there making the Klan and the Citizens Council and these other groups also be nonviolent... If the leaders of the nonviolent movement can go into the white community and teach nonviolence, good. I'd go along with that. But as long as I see them teaching nonviolence only in the black community, we can't go along with that. We believe in equality, and equality means that you have to put the same thing over here that you put over there. And if black people alone are going to be the ones who are nonviolent, then it's not fair. We throw ourselves off guard. In fact, we disarm ourselves and make ourselves defenseless. . . . [W]e of the Organization of Afro-American Unity realized the only time the black man in this country is given any kind of recognition, or even listened to, is when America is afraid of outside pressure, or when she's afraid of her image abroad. So we saw that it was necessary to expand the problem and the struggle of the black man in this country until it went above and beyond the jurisdiction of the United States. . . . What African Americans failed to do. Hamas has achieved.

As we approach Juneteenth on June 19th, let's reflect on the historical significance and the ongoing journey toward true freedom. On this day in 1865, the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom. Yet, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminds us, the struggle for true freedom continues: “I must say, however, that riots such as have occurred do achieve at least one partially positive effect: They dramatically focus national attention upon the Negro’s discontent. Unfortunately, they also give the white majority an excuse, a provocation, to look away from the cause of the riots—the poverty and the deprivation and the degradation of the Negro, especially in the slums and ghettos where the riots occur—and to talk instead of looting, and of the breakdown of law and order. It is never circulated that some of the looters have been white people, similarly motivated by their own poverty. In one riot in a Northern city, aside from the Negroes and Puerto Ricans who were arrested, there were also 158 white people—including mothers stealing food, children’s shoes and other necessity items. The poor, white and black, were rebelling together against the establishment.” As we celebrate Juneteenth, let's remember that the journey toward equality and justice is far from over. 1. Juneteenth was when the slaves in Texas found out they where no longer slaves. Why do we celebrate I’ll tell you why we celebrate Juneteenth. Juneteenth is a significant day in American history as it commemorates the end of slavery and the emancipation of African Americans. The end of slavery marked a significant milestone in American history, but unfortunately, it did not immediately result in equality for African Americans. The period following the end of slavery, known as Reconstruction, was marked by the implementation of discriminatory laws and practices, such as the Black Codes, which restricted the rights and freedoms of newly freed African Americans. These discriminatory practices eventually evolved into the Jim Crow laws, which enforced racial segregation and perpetuated systemic racism across the country. The Jim Crow laws led to widespread injustice and inequality for African Americans, particularly in the South, where they faced segregation in schools, public facilities, and various aspects of daily life. This era of segregation and racial discrimination persisted for decades, further marginalizing African Americans and perpetuating inequality. The Civil Rights Movement emerged in response to the injustices of the Jim Crow era, with leaders and activists advocating for equal rights and an end to segregation. This movement ultimately led to significant legislative changes, including the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which aimed to dismantle segregation and ensure equal rights for all citizens, regardless of race. These pieces of legislation marked a turning point in American history and laid the foundation for greater equality and civil rights for African Americans and other marginalized communities. The connection between the end of slavery, the era of Jim Crow, and the subsequent civil rights legislation underscores the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in American society. It demonstrates the need for continued efforts to address systemic racism and promote inclusivity, diversity, and equality for all individuals.

Today we honor freedom, celebrate unity , and reflect on our history. Juneteenth is an important holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Union General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas, that all enslaved people in Texas were free June 19, 1865. This announcement came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Enslaved people in Texas, upon hearing the news, celebrated their newfound freedom with jubilation. Juneteenth celebrations began as early as 1866, with community gatherings, prayer services, feasts, and various festivities. Juneteenth is a symbol of African American resilience, freedom, and perseverance in the face of oppression. It serves as a reminder of the long and challenging journey toward racial equality and justice in the United States. Today, Juneteenth celebrations often include educational events, community service initiatives, and discussions about racial equality and social justice.
