The paper estimated cognitive returns from schools, according to the authors, results from their estimation strategy indicate that as much as peer quality improves significantly through all selections of admission cutoffs, the actual increase in performance happens from attending the ranked Tier I high schools. #peerquality #peerinfluence in #academicperformance from #attendingbetterschools an #academicbenefits

Beyond Traditional Goals: The Need for Personalized Aims in Education Imagine a romantic scenario where a lady inquires about the purpose of a relationship, and the gentleman simply replies, "To foster more love." This exchange mirrors the responses you might get from famed figures when asked about the aims of life or education. Charles Darwin, the renowned biologist, might suggest that the aim of life is "Simply to propagate life" or that "Life lacks inherent meaning or purpose." Similarly, John Dewey, a notable philosopher of education, could argue from a naturalistic standpoint that the aim of education is an endless pursuit of knowledge. Dewey often equated education with growth, raising the question: Does education really have no specific aim? Should students play a role in setting their own educational goals? I contend that education inherently possesses objectives that must be achieved. These aims are the very essence of the existence of educational institutions, both formal and informal. While educators and institutions certainly have teaching goals, it's crucial for students to actively participate in shaping their learning objectives in the teaching and learning process as well. From my teaching experience, I've identified significant gaps in our educational system. We often pride ourselves on adopting a student-centered approach, yet students seldom have the opportunity to voice what they hope to learn from a particular lesson or topic. Typically, it's the teacher's objectives—based on predetermined success criteria—that dominate the lesson, not what the teacher intends to impart or what the students wish to learn. Imagine the fulfillment a student would feel upon realizing that the objectives they set for a lesson have been met. To genuinely transform our education system, we must move beyond the traditional teacher-as-expert model, encouraging students to be active participants rather than mere spectators in their educational journey. At the centre of all teaching activities are resources. From the time a teacher makes up their mind to be teach, they start interacting with materials, social and human resources. With the digital era comes unlimited access to the internet which provides vast resources for teachers. My research focuses on science teacher development and the resources that gets them through their micro and macro activities as professionals. During one of my courses in the 2022/2023 session, I conceived an idea to explore how preservice early childhood educators teach science with online resources and if they find this resources diversified enough for their student populations. This research was sponsored by the Kent State University Graduate Student Senate and it was accepted by Journal of Multicultural Education. I recently came across an insightful reflection from a fellow educator about student engagement, and it resonated with me deeply. The author shared a story from their early teaching days, where they realized they were calling on the same few students, leaving the rest of the class disengaged. This led them to rethink their approach and explore strategies like name sticks and small group discussions to ensure every student had a voice. As I read this, I reflected on my own practices as it’s easy to fall into the habit of relying on the most vocal students, but true engagement means reaching every student, encouraging them to be active participants in their learning. The author suggested some practical strategies like Think-Pair-Share, Quiz-Quiz-Trade, and Response Cards, which are great for promoting inclusivity in the classroom. These strategies remind me that engagement isn’t just about who speaks up first but about creating opportunities for all voices to be heard.
