Yesterday I had to chance to attend the ThePackHub event in the historical Oval Park in London together with Costas Papaikonomou. Thanks Paul Jenkins for making this happen! A full day of packaging experts and brand owners showcasing the next innovations to make the packaging industry more sustainable. Shoutout to team Meadow (https://meadow.global), who looked at an industry that already has 99% recyclability and adopted this to other verticals like beauty & care. No doubt there are a lot of great initiatives to solve the big questions about waste reduction, alternative materials, circular production and re-usability. BUT, and this is really a big but, the big question I left with is: "How can we reach mass adoption for all these great initiatives, when margins and money still rule the decision making?" What could the compelling event be to tip the scale? ☑️ Do we need to align more between brand owners and supply chain to build what we have vs build what you think you need? ☑️ Do producers need to partner together more to reach the needed production volume? ☑️ Do we need to differentiate portfolios more for better margin control? ☑️ Do we need to regulate more or less to drive innovation? ☑️ ..... Or is it all of the above and more, but we have a cold start problem? Let's discuss or reach out via DM. Time to make a 10x impact 🚀

📢 News from our projects 🌱 Bio4Circularity believes in the importance of research, development, and innovation in creating a circular economy through innovative bio-based solutions. ♻️ 🎉 As such, we celebrated the success of Sustainable Christmas Days held last week (📅 December 9th - 13th) at Campus Bergedorf, HAW Hamburg. The event highlighted the incredible efforts of the BALTIPLAST Project, which aims to 🌊 reduce the usage of plastic products in the Baltic Sea region through partnership and cooperation across six countries. 🤝 🎨 To put theory into practice, ten workshops were held, focusing on creating waste-free holiday decorations and cultivating sustainable practices among the young generation. 🌟🎄 More than 220 pupils 👧👦 from Grundschule Leuschnerstraße, Bergedorf, participated in the event and learned how to celebrate the holiday season with joy, creativity, and a commitment to the environment. 💚✨ 🔗 To learn more and join the exclusive Bio4Circularity network, visit: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eFrWsqHN #Bio4Circularity #SustainableChristmas #CircularEconomy #Innovation #Sustainability #PlasticReduction

Glass furnaces today usually burn fossil gas to melt their product. I've covered this topic before, and there's a discussion within the industry about how much of it can be electrified. Fully electric glass furnaces exist, but in the past, they have only been used for special glasses in relatively small facilities. Attempts to electrify larger glass furnaces have turned out to be difficult, an industry representative has told me that a failed eletrification project in the US more than a decade ago was a "real trauma for our industry". Hybrid furnaces that use mostly electricity, but still some gas - potentially green hydrogen in the future - are an option some glass companies pursue. French glass maker Verallia has now inaugurated a fully electric glass furnace. With a capacity of 180t/day, it is larger than most existing fully electrified glass furnaces but still small compared to some of the larger glass furnaces. For comparison, Ardagh Group's NextGen furnace (mostly electric, still some gas) funded by Kompetenzzentrum Klimaschutz in energieintensiven Industrien (KEI) in Germany has a capacity of 350t/day.
📢 Big news! Verallia has just inaugurated its first 100% electric furnace at the Cognac plant, a world first in the food glass packaging industry. With a capacity of 180 tons of glass per day, this furnace reduces CO2 emissions by 60% compared to traditional furnaces. This innovation is a key milestone in Verallia's goal of drastically reducing carbon emissions, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the glass industry. It’s also a proud moment for us as we continue to lead the way in decarbonization, serving our clients and partners 🤝 Read more: https://lnkd.in/ejrPWatQ 🎬 AVH FILMS #Verallia #Innovation #Sustainability #Decarbonization #GlassIndustry

In this MRW article from earlier this year, Recresco's Tim Gent discusses the need for investment into sorting technology to maximise glass into remelt. "Recycling and waste management reform is welcome but it must be well considered and result in positive change, driving more glass into remelt and promoting responsible long term recycling habits." As Kramer once said, I spent a month there one night. And he may have been referring to El Paso, TX but it feels appropriate to apply that epic quote to Vegas last week. Why? Because the largest recycled materials conference descended upon the entertainment capital of the world April 15 through the 18th. From receptions, to networking, to educational sessions, to the giant expo hall, to multiple live podcasts and culminating with a mega announcement of a rebrand … the 4 days 3 nights was perfectly timed with Taylor Swift’s new Fortnight song because it felt like a fortnight… in a good way. With almost 7000 people attending ISRI2024 - aka ISRI - the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries - it was incredible to see the range of participants. From traditional attendees like recycling equipment to metal, paper and plastic recycling facilities to brokerage and trading houses to aluminum, copper and steel mills to manufacturers and oems. To newer attendees like technology and software firms bringing AI and process improvements to our industry. What was the biggest topic of the week? It wasn’t the typical where will scrap prices go? Excuse me - recycled materials go? Don’t worry that was talked about … it was what will ISRI rebrand itself? For an industry that trades information - the rebrand was under lock and key before the big reveal on the last day which created quite a bit of buzz around the big day. So what did ISRI rebrand itself as? … and unless you haven’t logged into that B2B app lately … the new name of ISRI is officially ReMA - the Recycled Materials Association! Be sure to rest up and join us for ReMA2025 in San Diego next year May 12-15! #ISRIHistoryMade #RecycledMaterials #ReMALaunch Recycled Media Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) Robin Wiener Brett Ekart Colin Kelly Jay Robinovitz Sandy Brooks Kimberly Scott Todd Kauffman Jr. Alex Vazquez John Sacco Christian Von Holten Jessica Driggers Judy Ferraro
