Crocodiles and alligators, while similar, have several key differences that distinguish them from one another. Here are the main distinctions:
Crocodiles have a V-shaped, pointed snout, while have a U-shaped, broader snout. When a crocodile's mouth is closed, the fourth tooth on each side of the lower jaw is visible. But when an alligator's mouth is closed, the teeth in the lower jaw are not visible at all. I bet you didn't know that, did you?
Crocodiles generally have a rougher and more rugged appearance with more pronounced bony plates, while alligators have a smoother skin appearance when compared to the former. Crocodiles prefer saltwater or brackish water and are often found in coastal areas, estuaries, and mangrove swamps. But alligators prefer freshwater environments such as rivers, lakes, and swamps.
Crocodiles tend to be more aggressive towards humans compared to alligators (didn't you use to think it was the opposite?). Alligators are generally less aggressive and more likely to avoid human interaction. Doesn't mean you should mess with them, though.
Crocodiles typically have a lighter, olive brown coloration, but alligators usually have a darker, almost black coloration. And, of course, you say "After a while" to one and "See you later" to the other.
