Cortisol levels are one pathway in which mentality can directly affect physical health -- in particular the stress response can affect how a body regulates blood sugar, and can decrease the body's insulin sensitivity. Blood sugar dysregulation is one effective way of systematically damaging life sustaining organs and bodily function -- in particular, the liver, the kidneys and the cardiovascular system. Pretty serious stuff. This is potentially one biological explanation for how emotion regulation may safeguard against biological morbidity in conditions that can be prone to provoking physiological stress responses.
