Coaches and therapists who make claims that they are totally neutral, objective, facilitating forces ("I never impose my worldview" etc) are *at best* lacking critical nuance about what's happening in this kind of interaction I say this confidently because I used to claim and believe these things about my own practice The more I learned and experienced, the more untenable claims like that about my coaching became Believing you can be this non-influencing or imposing force imo fundamentally misunderstands the intermeshing subjective realities we find ourselves in You're also essentially saying you've mastered your own unconscious, not to mention handling what is thrust at you by the unconscious of others More in the comments 🧵

Do you believe you are really choosing your coach/supervisor/therapist/consultant freely? Berne (1972, 304) - "The patient will choose a therapist according to the needs of his/her script" For example a person's script that called them to rebel will often choose a rebellious therapist. The person with a series of failings will select a therapist who is ineffective. In the case of the third party referral, the choice of the therapist may reflect the needs of the person making the referral. I purposely selected my supervisor on the basis that they did not reflect my script, in fact they represented part of me that I wanted to grow and develop.
