Everyone has a role to play in keeping children safe in sport! This #SafeInSport Week, we want to highlight a set of resources created by the NWG (The National Working Group for Sexually Exploited Children and Young People) with individuals who have lived experience of abuse or harm across sports environments. These resources are designed to help the sports sector in their recognition and response to abuse, harm and exploitation while amplifying the voices of those living with the adverse impact of abuse. Discussing how we plan to incorporate these resources to deliver our strategy, Geraldine Costello, Director of Welfare and Safe Sport at British Gymnastics commented: “It’s vital that these resources are embedded within our overall strategy. Our aim is to create safe, fun, healthy, and inclusive gymnastics environments, where children, young people, and adults can enjoy gymnastics as a positive, uplifting experience. Safeguarding and welfare are at the core of everything we do. A very good initiative by PNGRFL. Rugby League is a contact game, and it's even more physical in PNG than it is played in other parts of the world. The level of brutality and toughness put in this sport is very crazy. Hence, getting injured when playing is obviously inevitable. Our rugby League players are not well looked after, although it is deemed to be a profession for those who take part in the sport. The little that they get from playing is not enough to take care of themselves, their families, and their health. This is a motivation and a relief to every players who dig their own pockets to pay their medical bills. Most of our young blokes are quitting the sport through injuries,while others don't wanna take part in fear of getting injured. Such initiative will make this sport become more professional and will encourage players to play the game we love in PNG. #One_at_a_time. #Getting_there #PNG_will_change #Great_Initiative

From the work we have been doing with the Irish Rugby Union set-up it's clear that balancing elite sport with education presents unique challenges for young athletes. The pressure to excel in both arenas can lead to intense psychological stress, where the fear of underperformance in one area impacts the other. As competition grows fiercer, the demands on time and energy make it difficult for these athletes to fully engage in their studies or enjoy the typical experiences of youth. It’s crucial we foster environments that support not just their athletic development, but also their mental health and academic growth, ensuring they have the tools to succeed both on and off the field. #wholepersondevelopment #Dualpathway
