The maternal mortality rate for Black mothers is far and away the highest in the United States as compared to other race groups. According to the CDC, non-Hispanic Black moms are almost THREE TIMES AS LIKELY TO DIE during and around childbirth compared to those who are of Hispanic origin or non-Hispanic white: https://lnkd.in/dMsqn9MH. This week is Black Maternal Health Week and I would highly encourage you to 1) educate yourself on Black maternal health 2) learn about the root causes of the health gap 3) donate to agencies that uplift and advocate for Black moms (like Generate Health STL, currently garnering support during their week-long campaign), and 4) advocate for all moms and their maternal health, ESPECIALLY BLACK MOMS. The gap is far too great to ignore.
TL;DR: Celebrate my #Heartiversary with a contribution to #GenerateHealth https://lnkd.in/eTuw9DFg There is really only one thing I remember about how I spent April 12, 2011. Cameron was a week old and I was having trouble nursing him. That night, I cried in the shower until the water turned cold thinking "I can't even feed this kid, how am I going to figure out EVERYTHING else" about parenting and motherhood? The next morning, I suffered and survived post-partum #SCAD heart attack. Navigating the world as a survivor is wonderful, complex and messy. Some days, the grief of the life I lost hits hard; other days I feel like the luckiest person on the planet that I get to live this hard, beautiful life. And still other days, I wonder if I'm doing everything I can with this second chance to be a mom, friend and fighter. Tomorrow, I celebrate my golden #heartiversary - 13 years of survival on 4/13. As #BlackMaternalHealthWeek week comes to an end, I am sobered by the number of Black moms who didn't survive their pregnancy or who didn't live to celebrate their baby's first birthday. Please contribute to Generate Health STL #GiveGHDay2024 to celebrate with me, to honor the legacy of those who were lost and resource a movement to save the lives of Black and brown moms and babies. https://lnkd.in/eTuw9DFg

It’s #blackhistorymonth and this year, I’m taking a different approach to my typical post. I want to talk about something that affects black families every day, yet remains a taboo topic: pregnancy and infant loss. The CDC reports that black women are 2-3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. Additionally, black infant mortality is 2.3 times higher than white infant mortality. These numbers are a stark reminder of the problems black women and families face within healthcare systems. I know firsthand how devastating these statistics can be. My family is one family impacted by these outcomes. The narrative needs to change, these outcomes need to be prevented. We owe it to our community to fight for advancements in this space, to raise the voices of our women and children until changes come about. During this Black History Month, let’s remember and pay respects to the women and children that we have lost during labor and delivery. Let’s work together to prevent these outcomes and ensure that our families receive the care they deserve. Rest in peace Andreas, you will always be in my heart. #blackhistorymonth #pregnancylossawareness #infantlossawareness #healthcareinequity #blackfamiliesmatter

A child that grows up with parental love and care. Will have the seed of love. The one that grows up with parental insult will, also have something to grow up with. It a matter of time. Whatever you are planting, you will harvest. How you treat your children, will soon reflect soon. What are you planting? Fruit of the spirit or the work of the flesh. #Godiscountingonyou# #Parentalcare# #parentalbond#

Today is Maternal Health Awareness Day. As a public healther, a dad, a son, a partner to a mom - a mom who is a strong and resilient birth trauma survivor, a mom who is currently pregnant - today brings a ton of terrifying statistics with complicated root causes. And the simplest of answers - we must care enough to act. We must prioritize the health, well-being, and lives of moms and their babies at any and every chance we get. Especially moms and babies who are the most marginalized by our systems and most at risk for the worst outcomes - Black moms, rural moms, low-income moms, immigrant moms, moms without support or resources, moms who need society to recognize their resilience and dignity and strength. It's scary times. South Carolina received an F rating from the March of Dimes in 2023. Almost half of SC counties do not have full access to quality maternity care. Moms build families and communities. Learn something, do something, love somebody enough to care.
