Did you know that accidents in the rig floor can be more costly than drilling Operations? Rig Floor Safety in Oil and Gas Operations. A rig in oil and gas operations involves busy and risky place during drilling operations. Crew members must take safety precautions all the way from the rig floor accessibility procedures, be aware of rotating equipment and uphold standard operating procedures while executing their duties on the on the rig floor. Slippery floor, handling of tongs, drill pipes, slips and spinning chain are the biggest contributors to safety incidents on the rig floor. Hazards Involved Crew members on the rig floor are usually exposed to storms, excessive heat and humidity or the opposite extremes of cold temperatures and strong winds. Furthermore, they experience stay away from their families for long periods depending on the company shift change policy and this could lead into loneliness. Such situations can lead to stress, impact their mental health, and lower their concentration. To avoid safety incidents, the company man and the tool pusher should ensure that all crew members are well trained and are competent enough before undertaking any tasks on the rig floor and they take regular rests. Accidents on the rig floor can be more costly than the drilling operation itself, therefore, safety must be paramount and there should never be any safety lapse. Safety Precautions Extra precautions should be taken during pipe handling, making up pipe connections, running in hole casings, pulling out of hole the bottomhole assemblies, and running in hole the lower completions. Crew members must ensure proper usage of the recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), should avoid distractions, and observe standard operating procedures as approved by the Company man and the Tool pusher, while undertaking their tasks on the rig floor. Dropped objects from the crown block and other parts of the derrick. The Slip hazards can't be forgotten due to the mud.. The rig floor is a hub of trip and fall hazards ranging from the rig components to the other equipment used there.. With improved technology, we moved from the kelly system to TDS... regardless, these are hydraulic meaning they can also always fail. The pinch points and impact points are quite many.. Just to mention afew.. For our safety, elimination comes first, in this case, let's maintain only the working crew there by respecting the zone markings as it's a red zone around the rotary table(most action takes part here) and the green zone being near the driller's cabin. On the rig floor, the two zones are clearly marked by the green and red visible marks.. Other control measures follow in the order of ERICPD and ESEAP according to risk and hazard control respectively.
